DISMISSED MINERS.
BLACKBALL COY REFUSAL To Share Work. DEPUTATION TO GOVERNMENT. (Special to Argus.) WELLINGTON. August 23. After the Westport Harbour deputation waited on the Premier and Sir F. Bell to-day, Mr H. E. Holland introduced Messrs Whittle and Mcßride, who spoke regarding the Blackball miners who are being dismissed. Mr Holland said that 170 miners were being dismissed, and he urged that places be found for them on the Baller Gorge Railway, or elsewhere. Mr F. Whittle detailed the circumstances which; led up to the notices being served on the miners. This arose out of the lack of a market. The miners. he said, were willing to share the wink, but the Blackball Coal Coy, so far. had not agreed to this, and the men were thus due to go. He stressed the hardship which these dismissals meant, and urged that employment be provided for the men. Mr Mcßride endorsed Mr Whittle’s statement' and pointed out that the permanency of employment at the Buller end depended upon the workable condition of the Westport Har.bpur. ~ Mr Coates promised to consult the Public Works Minister, and said that he would see wfyat could be done.
