UNITED PARTY. Sir Joseph Ward’s Invitation to Lead. (Australian an.. _,.Z. Cable Ar n.) VANCOUVER. August 21. Sir J. Ward has re-affirmed the Winnipegl .statement that he has been requested at the instance of fifty representative members of the United Party of New Zealand to assume the leadership. The ex-Premier sails for New Zealand to-morrow. He stated that he would confer with the party representative? on his arrival. In aJi interview, Sir Joseph Ward said the United Party’s invitation was contained in a cablegram received before he reached Winnipeg. Obviously it would not be fitting to accept yet. Upon his arrival home he would be met by 50 candidates, and would givehis answer. He had also informed them by cable. Sir Joseph.. Ward has received no communication from, the leaders. He intimated that a section of the party was opposed to his leadership. The situa tion was the result of a political skirmish. Only by building and maintaining reciprocal tra.de within tb.e Empire would the Commonwealth bp unified. WOMAN REFORM CANDIDATE. AUCKLAND. August 22. Mrs C. E. Maguire has received in a letter from Mr Coates, official endorsement of her candidature rfor Auckland East, in the Reform interest, together with coidial wished for her success. REFORM DIFFERENCES. WELLINGTON, August 22. The R ‘form League is meeting today. and is considering ‘he ,position in Wellington East, where Mr J. J. Clark will ?tand against the sitting member, Mr T. Forsyth; also Mr Nosworthy’s reported intention of Handing again for Mid-Canterbury. Mr .Clark has tendered his resignation as chairman of th ■ Wellington executive of the Reform League. Mr r lark is also resigning as member of f e Dominion Executive of the League. There appears to b * a deadlock as io whether Mr Nos worthy or Mr D. Jones shall have the Reform Party label in .the Mid-Canterbury contest. Mr Nosworthy’s claim consists in his expectation of a good vote from A'hburtori. Mr G. W. Russell is standing as a Liberal for Mid-Canterbury, and likewise Mr H. M. Jones, of Ashburton. LABOUR MAYOR TO CONTEST WANGANUI SEATWANGANUI, August 22. Mr W, J. Rogers. Mayor of Wanganui, to-night consented to nomination as Labour candidate at .the General Election. The other candidates so far announced are Mr W. A. \ eitch. U.N.Z.P.P., and Mr N. J. Lewis, R? form.
