BLACKBALL NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
. The output,of the Blackball M iue onl Tuesday reached the highest mark for years when the day’s output reached 887 tons. The wage-slaves of Blackball became quite excited this week when the news went around that there was a full week’s work in prospect. The work” whistle on Wednesday upset calculations. Black damp, the bugbear of the Blackball Mine, is still going off in, large quantities in the Dip Section. ’ Last Saturday saw the BlackballGrey bu s uncomfortably overcrowded; It is stated that one or two individuals had a nice ride on the footboard. The arrival of another bus will, overcome the; Saturday overcrowding. Mr N. Harrison, a former resident of Blackball, is at present a visitor renewing old acquaintances. It is.to be noticed that immigrants still continue to arrive in New Zealand. “Let ’em fill come!” says the Governor. We (not meaning himself, of course) can all semi.starve together. Some members of the nursing profession who have been enjoying a. holiday in this burg lately developed a craze for equine exercise, and were seen to leave Blackball early last Sunday morning, out ostensibly, for a ride into the back country. On leaving, they showed. great dash, but I understand they ambled home, after dark, looking rather dejected, and much the worse for wear, vowing vengeance on the party who advised them to undertake this mode of- travel. You cannot beat reclining in .a comfortable settee! It is hoped by the Pipe Band that the publicity given in a local paper will result, in an increased attendance at the next euchre tournament, which is to be held on Tuesday next. A recent visitor to this locality said there were as many dogs in Blackball as citizens, and he advocated the appointment of a dog-catcher. A’ roll-call meeting of the Blackball Miners’ Union will be held on Sunday at 10 a.m. Blackball, kiddies, with one eye on the prize money, are hoping that the weather will hold till after Saturday, at least, to enable the postponed May Day Sports to be hold. Blackball senior League football team' for the coming week-end will be:— ,Lamberton, Haisty. Neilson, McDonald, 1 Dodds, Kells, Kinsella, Hansen, Bogers, i Long, Williams, Skilton, Dando. Emergencies, Cutbush and Hudson. The juniors and third graders are also fielding strong thirteens. and will give a good account of themselves’. SOCCER NOTES. Prospects for the blackball schoolboys’ team are now much brighter, the Secretary having already been promised games with Grey Main, Dobson and Ruhanga School teams. The present Blackball senior team is composed of six Scotsmen and five “Lanes ” so it will now have to establish the “Bed Bose and Thistle” as its eoat.of-arms.
Overheard at the recent game, at Blackball, on the arrival of the Pjpe Band on to the ground: That the Blackball Soccer fans had something up their sleeve when they solicited the services of their Band for the occasion, as the Bunanga team was composed entirely of “Lancs” and “Geordies,” and, needless to say, judging by the second half display of the Blackball team, it had the desired effect.
Prom reports already to hand, Freddie Moor, the former Blackball back, is making quite a name for himself in other quarters, in more ways than one. the recent report being that he is trying to establish a boxing booth at Dunollie*
Runajnga Soccerites have signified their intention of invading Blackball on the occasion of the Soccer Club ball on June 22m1. Already a full busload have booked up for the occasion. The Selectors of the Blackball Soccer Club have not been long in filling th? left back position made vacant by the transfer of F. Moor to Bewanui. Tn the recent game with Bunanga, B. Caldwell filled the position with credit, and played himself into the team. T. Clark the local right half-back, although leaving the locality, has signified his intention of still assisting the i local club. R. Nelson was unable to turn out against Bunanga, but his absence unearthed a good substitute in Caldwell, and thic will enable the selectors to fill other positions where there is still room for improvement. Pickering (Bunanga) was completely bottled up by Tom Clark at Blackball. It was quite evident that Tom some time or other must have had a job in a “bottling” department, as he had the business off to a nicety, and the goal that ho scored from over 30 yards range was a gem. of the first water. Recent comments to hand re Runanga players are that Ennor was just hi s usual self in goal, making few mistakes. Preston, on this form, is a far better half-back than Beaton, and Sam was no duffer. Danny Barnes and Pattinson were safe and sure in all things, that old head of Danny’s upsetting promising Blackball movements on several occasions. Hewison can play better than his form on Saturday indicated. Marley was a s usual a good forager, but never dangerous when, in front? of goal. Craig I like for his following up Of every kick until it crosses the goal line. It is quite evident that Pickering is not in his element when opposed by a bustling opponent. Bayley is “the goods” if coached in the right direction.
The backs, in my opinion, were too shaky under pressure,, but will improve as. the season advances. McCowan, of Dobson:, gave every satisfaction as refreec, and handled the game very ably.
After-the Dobson-Blackball game the selectors were heard in a trio: “‘.Oh, Whore , are the Boys of the Old Brigade?” Blackball have a 15 year old Scottish schoolboy . international playing for them, and he gave afine display against Runanga. More of this boy wil) be heard in the futureThe Blackball senior team to meet Rewanui at Dunollie on Saturday next is as. follows: —Parsonage, Cochrane, Caldwell, JT. Ulark.. Smith, McNicol, Mcikle, F. Clarke, Jas. Anderson, Rarity, Hampson. Emergencies. Nelson and Henderson. Cars leave Blackball P.O. at 12.30 sharp. Blackball junior team to meet Dob son juniors at Blackball will he ! :— Hutchisbn, Lamberton, Boyle, McDpde J. Hardie,. Jock Anderson, John Aq’der. son,, McArthur,. McGorgan Swibley AlcVjear. Emergencies, Guthrie and A. McNicol. t 3 “ - r 'l- - - / - j
