Mr Emmett O’Brien, of Nelson Creek, was yesterday admitted to the Grey River Hospital, with an injury to his eye, into which a splinter penetrated on Monday evening when he was chopping a piece of wood.

The Canterbury farmers excursion to Southland is now on, and no fewer than 728 are taking part. The excursionists include fanners from as far north as Cheviot, to Glenavy in the south, and from Springfield to Akaroa. When the train left Christchurch the party comprised 241, but the number was swelled at each of the stopping places. Ashburton contributed 146, and Timaru 75.

The Prime Minister, replying to the request of March 14th forwarded by the Mayor (Mr J. W. The recent Wellington wool sale, the final this season for New Zealand, effected a complete clearance, and the prices paid were the best since 1924. Compared with February realisations, prices showed an all-round increase, ranging from Id to 2Jd for fine wools, and Id to 2d for other sorts except lambs’ wool, which was down Id. Bellies, and locks were up Id to 14d, and crutchings sold extremely well at lid to 2d advance on last month. The sale was a very satisfactory wind-up to a satisfactory season. The offering was approximately 20,880 bales. A fire at Totara Flat has destroyed an old structure known as Baybutt’s Store. At 2 a.m. on Saturday Mr Worsley discovered the fire, and he helped Mrs Cannon, who was living in the building, to safety. The building was owned by Hahn Brothers, Ahaura, and was insured in the Commercial Union Office for £1250. Mrs Cannon had her homo at Totara Flat burned down only a few weeks ago as a result of grass and bush fires. She moved into the store until the erection of a new cottage. Practically all her belongings were lost in the store fire.

A loud crash startled a large num ber of Alexander Street residents last night, and brought many hurrying from their bonus to investigate, many

thinking it was another earthquake. Their fears were alleviated when it was found that the heavy wind had blown a large tree over on a section opposite the Marist Brothers Schiol, fortunately without any damage resulting.

The resident hurried forward to render what assistance he could but to his amazement the car had no occupant. It took some few minutes before the resident could deduce that the wind had set the ear in motion, the steep incline doing the rest. Considerable interest is being taken by the rapidly increasing ranks of swimmers on thi 1 Coast in the Carnival to-morrow evening at the Greymouth Municipal Baths, as it will be the last of the season. A feature of especial interest will be the appearance of Mr C. Atkinson, one of New Zealand’s , leading swimmers, while A. Brownlie, I who put up tlrc record for the bath for i 33 1-3 yards of 17 seconds, will make ian attempt to lower his record. The r entries received promise to provide great sport and good swimming, and k should draw a big attendance. The I object of the Carnival is a very deservI ing one, as the proceeds will b e devoted ' to the dependants of the late Mr J. Shannahan, who was always noted as a good sportsman. Competitors are coming from all parts of the district to take part in the Carnival.
