( Mr W. Dunne, of Reefton, is spending the week-end in Grvymouth. A fire alarm was given on Friday evening at 7 o’clock, when it was discovered that th e blackberries at th* side of Dr Scott’s house and near an empty house owned by Mrs J. Osbourne, were burning. The Fire Bri gade were quickly on the scene and the flames were of a very na'turc, the sparks flying in all directions with a. heavy wind fanning them onwar* Is. The fire was quickly subdued. The rain commenced on Friday evening about 8 o’clock, and continued throughout the night in a continuous and substantial fall. A boys’ bicycle road race around the station and return took place on ' Friday evening, when only fiv e riders faced the starter. A strong wind was • blowing and the lads had a very hard. • ride. The result was a win by two lengths for E. Strachan, his time being 9 min 36 secs, with A. Hill second in 9min 36sec. E. Topp, three lengths further back was third. There also started, W. Lockington ami H. Patterson. The last-named little lad, who is on the small side, competing against much bigg- r boys, rode a. wil-ing race, but did not fill a place. A meeting of the Reef ton Cricket Club was held in the Club Rooms on Thursday evening, when Mr C. Tat tlcy occupied the chair, there being also presest Messrs O. Hendry, W. Carden, C. Tattley, J. Wills, J. AlcDona.ldj J. H. Hudson, T. Hunt and O. Mclnroe (Secretary). It was resolved that the Club fulfil their promise to play a return match with St Canice’s Club of Westport on Sunday week,', ’Apftl Ist, 1928., the team to leave Reef ton at 7 a.m. sharp that morning. It was decided that the Westport Club be notified that this Club were sorry that they could not possibly get to Westport on Saturday night, owj-ng to members not beingable to get away, but, weather permitting, the 'team would arrive in Westport on Sunday n orning between 10 and 11 a.m. It was also resolved that tenders be called for the conveyance of the cricket team, numbering 17 members, to Westport, and returning the same evening, tenders to close with the Secretary on Tuesday night, at 7 p.m. It was resolved that a special meeting b • held on Thursday next at 7.30 p.m. and that the Selection Committee select as many playing members as possible, any member not being available to notify the secret’ry before Thurs-’ y evening. It 'wa> decided that a return match of married v. single men, be played at the Reefton racecourse today at 1 p.m. sharp. It was agreed that two men be appointed to look after the refreshments nt the matches held on the race-course. This rule will lu* strictly enforced and that Mr J. Wills and the Secretary be appointed io carry out the duties of serving out refreshments. It was decided that the Club have a table at the gate for voluntary donations from the public, the. same as the football unions. Accounts amounting to £2 16s 4d were passed for payment. A sitting of the Assessment Court before Mr W. Meldrum Judge. when an objection by the Progress Mines of New Zealand. Ltd., to the valuation of certain mining properties held by it, adjourned from last sitting of the Court was settled by the parties. At a sitting of the Warden’s Court before Mr W. Meld rum. Warden. David Absalom, and Frederick Harrison (Mr Patterson) applied for an | Ordinary Prospecting License of 16 - acres at Snowy River. This was adjourned to April 5. At the Magistrate’s Court judgment for plaintiff by default was given in each of the following cases: J. Col-

lins v John Thomas, £8 3s 6d and costs £1 10s 6d; R. M. Hempsedd v Richard Straight, £3 10s 6d and costs £1 7s 6d; J. W. Chalk v R. Straight £1 12s 2d and costs 8/-. Tn a suit J. W. Chalk v W. Read, the defend ant was required to explain why ho had not paid £l5 Is 6d, the amount of a judgment obtained against him. An order was made by consent for payment of £l5 Is 6d, and costs £2 8s 10<l by fortnightly instalments of £l. The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association of Canterbury Ltd., proceeded against E. Prior, defendant being required to explain why he had not paid £27 5s 3d. the amount of a judgmon' obtained again-1 him. No order ma le. LICENSING- CASES. For being round on. the Criterion Hotel, Reefton, during prohibited hours, two first offenders not appearing were each convicted and ordered to pay court costs 10/-.
