N.Z. Ladies’ Win AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. MELBOURNE, February 25. The women’s swimming championships resulted.— 100 yards backstroke championship. E. Stockley (New Zealand) 1. E. Robertson (New South Wales) 2. Won by eight yards. Time 1.22. 220 yards free style championship: K. Miller (New Zealand) 1, E. Davey (N.S.W.) 2, B. Taw (N.S.W.) 3. Won by four yards. 2.52 3-5. The events were swum at the Surrey drive.
Miss Miller led from the start in the 220 from Miss Taw. At 75 yards she increased her lead to a yard, and 40 yards from the finish had the race well in hand. She swam a. well judged
Misa Mealing (N.S.W.) led at the start of the backstroke competition, and appeared a likely winner, but at 50 yards she veered across the course over the barrier. Miss Stockley kept a good course, and same home winner by eight yards. Miss Mealing did not complete the course.
The New Zealand swimmers’ ability was commented upon in terms of high praise during the Carnival.
