EIGHTEEN YEAR OLP OFFENCE. AUCKLAND, February 10. John Sullivan, alias Joseph O’Keefe, 48, at present serving seven years’ for manslaughter, was committed for trial this morning, for an cighteen-year-old crime. He pleaded not guilty of stealing at Kinahakau in January, 1910, a black gelding and harness, of the total value of £lO /5/-. It was alleged that accused hired a horse to attend a Court case at Kawhia, and that he later sold the animal, the owner seeing no more of Sullivan until he identified him. in Court today.
CRIMINAL SESSIONS. PRISONERS SENTENCED, DUNEDIis, February 10. At the Supreme Court, Ivan Walter W. Hanning, for breaking, entering and theft, at Palmecrston Soutn, was admitted to three years’ probation. George Alexander Mason, fur receiving stolen goods, was placed on two pears’ probation. William McKinuel, for causing bod ily harm 7 was fined £lOO. TIM ABU, February .10.
At the Supreme Court, Kenneth Gordon Veitch, who pleaded guilty to a charge of carnal kfiewledge, was admitted to probation tor two years, Justice Adams stating that the sentence must not be taken to mean a similar course would be adopted in future cases.
Cecil Butlqr, on a charge of theft of £76/10/-, to which he pleaded, guilty was sentenced to reformative treatment for a period not exceeding two years. PALMERSTON N., Feb. 10. At the Court, Cornci !e llubet De May DatEcmade, for attempted sale of stock under bailment to the Crown, without authority, was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. Charles George Wilmot Palmer, to indecent assault on a male, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. DRUNKEN DRIVER FINED CHRISTCHURCH, February 10 In the Magistrate’s Court, Kenneth Andrew Bayne, a milkman, who admitted being drunk whilst in cfiarg e of a motor truck, was fined fifteen pounds and prohibted from driving for three years from April 1.
Accused and his bro^b'r were arrested last evening after a collision in the city. The brother was fined if)/- for drunkenness. MAORI’S ATTEMPT TO COMMIT CRIME. OtSBORNE, February 10. At the Magistrate, s Court to-day a Maori named George Ngarimu, nineteen years of age, -vns charged, with being found by night in a private house in Matawai with intent to commit a crime. The evidence showed that a married woman, a complete stranger to accused w'as awakened in her bed at night by accused, who was interfering with the. bedclothes. She called for assistance and accused escaped. Accused' pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
