PAROA SPORTS

SOME CLOSE CONTESTS. SATURDAY’S RESULTS. saa The Paroa Sports are now an established annual gathering, and the numerous assemblage of spectators at Saturday’s meeting had their expectation of good contests fully realised. The officials of the sports are to be complimented on the manner in which they were conducted, all the events being got off in good time. The officials were: —Patron, Mr .Tas. O’Brien; President, Mr J. N. Lawson; Judges, Messrs J. Flaherty and C. Austen; Handicappers, Mr G. E. Perkins (running) and Mr Rex Fitzgerald (sawing and chopping) ; Starters, Mr A. White- (running) and Mr J. Fairbairn (axemen’s events). The Secretary, Mr A. J. Hayden, was indefatigable in his work for the success of the meeting.

In the axemen’s events there were some excellent contests. Wilson, off 22 sec, proved the winner of the big underhand chop, but the veteran, W. Featherston, who was a popular fancy, gave him a close run in the final, after defeating him in the first heat. The event drew a big entry, and the chopping was good. There was quite a. big margin between the times of the trials and the final. Thus, the final took 80 seconds, while one head was done in a minute. No doubt, there was a big difference in the logs. The Paroa chop saw a dead-heat in the final between Dawson and T. Bannister, after the latter had defeated the former in the first heat, which was done in the quicker tihie. J. Bannister, who won his heat off 3 secs, chopped well in this event. Tn the foot racing, C. E.
