The Now Zealand Trotting Association has resolved to disapprove of the practice of tying horses’ tongues to prevent the tongues from getting over the bit, and recommends the use of a suitable bit. which is available for the purpose*. It was stated the S.P.C.A.. if it knew what goes on in this connection, would put several horse trainers in the hands of the law. Air G. E. Curry, the stipendiary steward acting at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s recent meeting, stated on Friday to the Association that his notice had been drawn to the use of a tape tied tightly round the tongue of a horse, to prevent it from getting it over the bit. He was inform ed that a narrow strap, tape, or handkerchief was frequently used for that purpose. In the case under notice he came on it in the horse stalls fifty minutes before the starting time of the race, in which the horse was engaged, ami from the tape to the tip of the tongue circulation had stopped, and the tongue was changing colour. Had he not chanced along, he had no doubt that the unfortunate horse would have been over an hour with its tongue tied. IT* had the tape removed, and allowed the use of a bit with a leather tongue, which was fastened to the bar. and lay on top of the horse’s tongue. Such a bit was quite efficient. A lady doctor in England has just declared that smoking is a wonderful preservative of the teeth, and that although the teeth of some smakers may be discoloured they are generally sounder than those of the non-smokers. So many hard things have been said about tobacco that it is refreshing to find a lady —and a lady medico at that —putting in a good word for the weed. Of course every smoker knows that smoking prevents or arrests dental decav. What every smoker does not knot, oi at all events ignores, is that an excess of nicotine in tobacco is highly injurious. And that’s where our New Zealand tobaccos come in. Being comparatively free from nicotine they mav be smoked almost incessantlv without affecting the nerves or heart. Moreover they are all toasted hence their fine flavour and delightful aroma. Made in several strengths, they appeal to all tastes. Riverhead Gohl, mild and aromatic; 1 ousted Navy Cut (Bulldog) is a fragrant medium; and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bull’s Head) a fine full flavoured tobacco. They arc on sale everywhere-2
