FAMINE IN SHANTUNG
STARVING CHILDREN Sold or Thrown Away DEATH FACING 60 PER CENT. OF POPULATION. (Received February 9 at 8.20 p.m.) SHANGHAI. February 9. Famine-stricken families in the Shantung Province are offering to sell their daughters tor five dollars, and many starving children are thrown away, buyers being not forthcoming, according to missionaries, who are appealing for assistance to stave off death by starvation of sixty per cent, of tin* population. Large financial grants were made by the Japanese Government and Ameri •- an Relief Societies. Hugo gifts of grain were also sent from Manchuria, a. special train carrying supplies in ordijr to save millions from a lingering Jtth. i • Ihe famine is the worst in the hisjptory ot the province. Those people who possess money are rapidly migrating to Manchuria. Sickness and disease are spreading, and the crops are not planted, thus immediate alleviation of the situation is unlikely.
