1 COSTLY HUTT ROAD SLIP. WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. i 7 liq_ City Engineer reported to the City and Suburban Highways Board to-day that the total cost of removing the slip on the Hutt Road last winter was £5130/2/4. This amount, however, . has been reduced to £3986/2/4 by the rebate of £1144/10/- paid by the Railway Department for spoil deposited in the Thorndon reclamation. SWEEPING OPERATIONS. DEPARTMENTAL NOTICE. WELLINGTON, February 8. Ihe Marine Department has issued a notice to-day on the authority of the Commodore Commanding the New Zealand Station, that from daybreak on . February 13th, sweeping operations will be conducted in the vicinity of the I reported position of the Northumberland Rock, on the* Ariel Bank, off Gis- ; borne. The operations will probably last several days, and the area will be marked ’ bj r unlighted buoys. Vessels are warned to keep well clear of the area. A further notice will be issued when \ the operations are completed and the . buoys withdrawn. STATION AND SHOP BURNED. TAIHAPE, February 9. At Mataroa, eight miles north of Taihape, at 3 o'clock this morning, the Jailway station and Lamb’s grocer’s shop were burnt to the ground. It is supeeted that the fire started in Lamb’s bakehouse. Lamb and his family lost everything, and escaped in their |dght attire. The station books and documents were saved Business is beng carried But in the I goods shed. A NAPIER BLAZE. NAPIER, February 9. An excellent save was effected by the brigade in a fire at a two storeyed Hvooden building in Hastings Street late last night. The brigade quenched I the blaze in excellent time so that’ only the rear portion was seriously effected. The build ng was jointly oc- | copied by Mr. Ken Evans, photographer; Duncan Lee, laundry, and the Savoy Cafe. Some of the occupiers were rescued by the brigade from the front veram fifth. The buildng was owned by the White Swan Brewery Co., and insured (Phoenix) for £BOO.
