The bowling green is a scene of much activity, both players and onlookers taking a keen interest in the games. Splendid weather conditions and the excellent condition of the green, and also the assistance of members of the ladies’ committee, who are serving out refreshments, all tend to make the tournament a huge success. On Friday evening the Greymouth Lana gave a concert in the Miners’ Hall. The opening item, Contest Hymn, “Nearer Afy God to Thee,” was greatly appreciated by the audience. The test i selection was a fine performance, the Band selection “Sliding Thro’ the Eye,” being also well rendered. A cornet solo by Air H. F. Vincent, “Shylock”’ and encore number “Lucilla” were much applauded. Other enjoyable items included a tenor horn solo “Cara A'allc Bolitana,” by Air J. Henderson, humorous resitation “Rehearsals,” and “The Vicar’s Presentation,’’ by Aliss I Bush, dramatic recitation, “Napoleon’s Tomb,” by Air P. Williamson; vocal solos, Air T. Clark, “The Devonshire Wedding,” “The Old Fashioned Town”; and a violin solo by Air H. Ashurst, who showed great ability and received much applause for his rendering of “Concerto,” “Gavotte” and “Red Gauntlet.” The wrare collieries annual picinc was held in Hokitika on Saturday, and proved a most successful and enjoyable affair. Over 1300 persons were present. The amount paid into the station for tickets issued amounted to £12!l). For sports prizes £lO. and for a bagy show £2/2/- was collected. One j very exciting event was the ladies’ stepping competition, won by Airs B. O’Brien with Miss J. O’Connell and Airs Bennett dead heat for second place. Tn the baby show under six months section T. Afuncaster and A. Dcvescovi tied for first place. The prize for six months and under twelve months was aw.'irdeM to P. Kendrick. The children received a silver coin each and also! lollies and fruit. During the day the) merry-go-round was worked to its full/ capacity by both young and old, but, to the dismay of all it was found that the charge for children, including babies, well as adults, was 6d per ride. The Committee were considerably annoyed to think that the enjoyment of their picnic was to be marred by such an imposition, so the proprietor of the-merry-go-round was approached by Committee members who pointed out that they would refuse to allow the children to ride on tho merry go-round unless the charge was reduced. After a great deal of arguing, the proprietor was induced to lower the charge, for children to 3d per ride. It was particularly notable that after this arrangement was made the rides were considerably shorter. The day was voted a huge success and all returned home very tired but happy'-.
