REEFTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Miss Elizabeth Davidson of Buuanga (formerly of Teramakau Settlement) is at present visiting Reefton. Mr. J. MeElwee jnr. of Reefton, entered the Reefton Hospital on Friday. He is suffering from pneumonia. Today his condition was reported to have improved. Mr. F. Cooke has entered the Reefton Hospital to undergo an operation for appendicitus. Mr. W. Russell of Hukarerc visited Reefton during the week-end.

Mr. W. Jaekmun of Nelson, Fire Adpuster for the State Fire Insurance Coy., who has been visiting Reefton in connection with the Broadway fire, in which the firm was much involved, returned to Nelson this morning.

Mr. and Mrs. 11. L. Watkin, who have been spending holidays in Reefton, as (the Quests of Mrs. J. Osborne,’ left for Feilding to-day. Miss K. Garvey and iMss D. Hawken, who been spending the week-end in Reefton, returned to Runanga this' morning.

Messrs A. Weaver, T. Hazeldine, W. Saunders, Trevor Brown, W. Greenhill and E. Twohilll (Greymouth) visited Reefton during the week-end.

A destructive fire occurred yesterday afternoon at Cronadun when a house, occupied and owned by Mr. Jas. Adams, on Mr. T. Smith’s property, was totally destroyed. It was caused by bushfires. Practically everything was burned. The property and household effects were not covered by insurance. Messrs G. Hill, W. Skelton, Terry Sigley, C. Barrow of Greymouth, visited Reefton on Sunday, to view the scene of the disastrous fire.

It was reported yesterday that despite the earnest efforts of 1 irefighters, twelve miles of the Mawherniti Tramway had been burned as the result caused by bushfires, which are raging still in that district. A light shower of rain fell on Saturday at 3.45 a.m., and a heavy shower fell continuously from 4 to 5 p.m. The latter was much appreciated. Many residents past the Railway Station however state that, they -had had no rain there whatever. Past evening when Inking across to Hukarai from Reefton, it was n mass of smoke and it is stated that the fires are still sweeping up the. gully from Hukawai and considerabla damage has been done to the valuable bush there. on return for Nelson this morning. Mr. W. Kelly of Inaiigahua Landing who has been spending the weekend in Reefton, left by this morning’s ear for Nelson. Rain drizzled for a few minutes this morning about 3 o’clock but nothing more than that), states a late shift coalminer. A. largo number of Westportonians visited Beefton yesterday to view the ruins of lest week’s fire. Some, 9 or 10 cars arrived about noon and there were also a good number from Greymouth.
