REEFTON NOTES.

(From Out Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, January 16. Mr G. Hubbard, who has been visiting Christchurch during the past fortnight, returned to Reefton on Saturday. ‘ The Nassau —Quotation brown mare Motion, owned by Mr E. W. Spencer, was destroyed yesterday as the result of breaking her fetlock. Pickaninny and Motion were having a trial, when Motion began to get along in a very peculiar style, and suddenly stumbled, throwing the boy, who was lucky in escaping injury. The mare was rather a disappointment so far as racing is concerned. Mr G. D. Cooper, who has been on an extended holiday to Dunedin and the South, returned to Reefton by Saturday ’s express. Messrs R. Bonish, A. P. Duffy, I). Roberts, J. Connelly and Wm. Jenkins, of Westport, visited Reef ton during the , week, and they are going to the Glaciers on Tuesday morning, on an extended tour. Miss K. Bonifacio, who has been spending a holiday in Reefton as the guest of her brother, Mr F. Bonifacio, returned to Westport this morning. Mr D. Wright and Mr L. Patterson, of Greymouth, visited Reef ton yesterday. Mr A. Davies, of Westport, passed through Reefton yesterday, on a tour along the West Coast to Dunedin and Queenstown, by private car. Mr and Mrs J. Hopkinson, Mr and Mrs Ben Jones, and Mr and Mrs R. Brownlie, of Granity, visited Reefton yesterday. They are leaving for the Glaciers this morning. Miss M. O’Donnell lias left for Christchurch on annual holidays. Mr and Mrs G. Stevens and family left by Saturday’s express for Christchurch, on holidays. The cup presented by the Licensed Victuallers of Reefton, in connection with the Licensed Victuallers’ Cup Handicap, at the Reefton Meeting, last Saturday week, was greatly admired, and went to a good sportsman in Mr 11. A. Rhind, who is the owner of Bronstell. No one should begrudge him his success. The cup was subscribed for by the local hotelkeepers, and it would not be thought an unwise proceeding if the West Coast Licensed Victuallers’ Association presented similar trophies to racing and trotting clubs. Mrs T. Morel, who has been spending a brief holiday with relatives here, returned to Greymouth this morning. Mr J. McKenzie and Mr W. J. Caldwell, of Greymouth, visited Reef ton today. Miss F. Cotter, who has been spending a holiday in Reefton as the guest of Mrs G. W. Osbourne, returned io

Runanga this evening. Miss M. Shiel, of Christchurch, is on a holiday! visit to Reefton, as the guest of Mrs P. B. Carmichael, Grey Road. The merry-go-round and side shows, which had a week’s run here, collected a lot of “chips.” Large numbers of children were to be seen enjoying themselves on the horses. The weather still continues very hot and sultry here, and rain is badly needed, the water supply having run very low. To-day it was reported that there was an increase of water in the reservoirs, but perhaps this is due to having the water turned off at intervals. Mr F. D. Walker, of Cronadun, who has not been in the best of health for some time past, has been compelled to enter the Rccfton Hospital for treatment. The atmosphere about the town is very smoky. This is no doubt causeu by the bush fires. This morning the Perfection Coal Coy - was reported to be jin danger through bush fires which surround the mine. All precautions are being taken to keep the fire out of the mine. A second helping is always the cry when Hayward’s “Military” Pickle is on the table. Who can resist its fine, piqiiant flavour? Always ask for ‘ 4 Military ’ ’.—6
