GERMAN SEAMEN DESERT SHIP. AUCKLAND, January 7. Seven members of the crew of the German steamer Kersten Miles, were left behind in Auckland ‘when their ship sailed this morning for Wellington. The deserters, who are all Germans, were missed yesterday, but a search of the City by the ship’s officers and the police, failed to find them, and it is believed they have made out into the country. The Kersten Miles will remain for some days discharging at Wellington, and it is hoped that the runaways will be caught in time to put aboard the vessel before she leaves for Newcastle, her next port. WELLINGTON WAREHOUSE. GUTTED. WELLINGTON, January 7. A serious fire broke out in a soft goods warehouse and factory on the first and second floors of premises owned by the Cooper Building Company Ltd., at the corner of Cuba and Vician Streets; last night, and completely'gutted both floors, doing damage estimated at fifteen thousand pounds. When the brigade arrived, names were issuing through the windows of the second floor, and had obtained a good hold of the third floor, which was occupied by F. Khou'ri and Company, who valued the stock at betw»eeu twelve and thirteen thousand pounds. Insurances on Khouri’s stock and plant are unavailable. The Cooper Building Company liad a cover of £5OOO on the building. -.
