GREYMOUTH J.C.

OPENING DAY. Big Race to Buoyant. The opening day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s Midsummer Meeting was held yesterday in line but dull weather. The attendance was somewhat affected by the showers that fell in the morning, but was nevertheless good. The track was in good condition, the rain which had fallen taking the sting out of the ground. The fields in the majority of cases were small, in four races only there being second dividends. Some keen racing, however, was witnessed, and the finishes in general were well contested. The public were fairly well on the mark in picking, three favourites winning, while other fancied horses ran into places. The locally-trained Buoyant was successful in annexing the big race, the Grey Valley Handicap, scoring a fairly easy victory from the favourite, Rascal. A. G. Campbell, rider of Rich Prize in the Highweight Handicap, was fined £5 for careless riding. During the afternoon the Municipal Band was in attendance, and rendered several appreciated items. The arrangements for a successful day were well in hand by the officials of the Club, and the races wore got off right up to time. The tote handled £8,532, compared with £9,2694 for the first day last year, a decrease of £7374- Results: — MAIDEN STAKES, of 80 sovs.; 54 furlongs:— 3—Mi- B. Dooley’s b.g. Going out of the straight Caliburn received a bad bump from the favourite. Spode led into the back stretch, followed by King Cheops and Ayrburn. The latter pair were first into the straight. Prince Ferouz led out of the barrier, and out of the straight in front of a bunch. Out of the straight Orbit went to the front, followed by Rina Mangu, Bronstell and Gay Bird. The last-named was interfered with going into the back stretch. Orbit maintained its lead coming into the straight, Bronstell being its nearest attendant.
