HOKITIKA NOTES.

(By Our Own Correspondent.)

HOKITIKA, November 28.

After a week during which the sun shone only for about 40| hours, the weather cleared this afternoon, and something like summer sunshine prevailed. Last week there was 2.4lins. of rain recorded here.

Anglers report good trout catches in the Arahura River. One Greymouth party did very well during the weekend.

Whitebait ran fairly well in the river on Sunday, but not very many fishermen were out, or rather the run was to be seen in places where drag nets alone would be useful, and the fish were rather shv.

Several local owners are getting their whippets into trim for the forthcoming contests here. Mi- B. Dowell has a very fast dog, named “Quimet,” which has performed well in Christchurch. From all accounts this animal is likely to prove pretty successful during the coming months. The fine afternoon on Saturday enabled the local bowlers to indulge in their pastime, there being a fairly good muster. Afternoon tea was supplied by Mesdames C. J. King and J. J. Breeze.

The Kokatahi Tennis Club opened their season on Saturday afternoon, when there was a record attendance, including a good number of visitors from Hokitika clubs. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea, a good spread being provided. Applications close on Wednesday, November 30th, for deer stalking licenses.

Supreme Court sittings here next year will be on the following dates: February 20, June 13, and September 12.

At the Princess Theatre the pupils of the Convent arc giving one of their popular concerts, an extra fine programme being in course of preparation, including excellent dancing and elocutionary items, together with a brilliant series of musical numbers, both vocal and instrumental. A cricket match, Hokitika v. Ruatapu, was held at the Mental Hospital grounds yesterday. Ruatapu defeated Hokitika in a one-innings match by f|B runs. Hokitika made 26, while Ruatapu made 124. C. Jolly made the best stand for Ruatapu. scoring over 60. They have a very fast bowler at Ruatapu named Greatbach, who rocks them in very hard indeed.
