RENT RESTRICTION.

General Opposition.

TO COUNCIL’S AMENDMENTS.

(Special to Argus.) WELLINGTON, November 28. The amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Rent Restriction Continuance Bill were disagreed with by the House of Representatives this evening, and the Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Labour, Mr P. Fraser

(Wellington Central), and Mr J. Mason (Napier) were appointed managers to draw up reasons. The Council’s amendments proposed to bring the amendments made by the Rent Restriction Act (1906), confining the law to cases under which Magisterial orders are made and fixing a standard rent on the present capital value, into force on February 1, 1928, instead of August 1, 1928. The Council also proposed new clauses, making special provision for the recovery of dwellings by a landlord on a magisterial order where the contract for the sale of freehold has been entered into.
