The Supplementary Estimates provide a grant of £349 for relief of victims in the recent flood at Westport.

There were seven men yesterday charged before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., with being found after hours on licensed premises, none of whom appeared. Five first offenders were ordered to pay costs, while a fine of £1 was imposed on a second offender and one of £2 on a third offender. There were some fair catches of whitebait made yesterday in the Grey River near the bar, ami a considerable quantity was retailed through the town during the day. The quality of the fish this year has remained good until later in the season than usual. There was also a late run of the fish on Sunday in the Hokitika River.

An Auckland wire states that two of the first penny postage stamps issued for New Zealand, valued at £l5O. have been obtained by an Auckland collector, Mr A. Brodie. There are only about 16 copies of the stamps in existence. They form a link with New Zealand’s early history, penny stamps having been limited to letters “sent or received by sailors or soldiers of her Majesty’s forces. ’ ’ They were issued in 1855.

The small suction dredge which is to work the black sand deposits in the Lagoon at Paroa has had a trial run, but has not yet made a start -with regular working. The dredge has an eight-inch suction pipe and is worked by a petrol motor. If this venture should prove a payable one, it is quite probable that other black sand deposits on West Coast beaches will be similarly exploited.
