WESTPORT NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.)

WESTPORT, November 26.

By courtesy of Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., a copy of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Act has been placed in my possession, as reported from the Labour Bills Committee. Originally containing 21 sections, it returned to the House with six. This leaves less to argue over certainly, but from appearances it will be sufficient. The Hon Mr Anderson would find it hard to recommend the Bill in its attenuated form.

Mr Creasy 8011, of Taylor, Enrights, is unfortunately on the sick list. A few days ago, through the fork of his bicycle breaking, he hurt his knee, and had to lay up through complications.

News has been received that Mr A. Loekey, of the Borough Gas Works staff, who has been to Christchurch for surgical -treatment, is improving. There was quite a glow of red about Palmerston Street on Friday afternoon. This was accounted for by the arrival of the different convoys of Fire Brigade men, with their red-trimmed uniforms. Upon arrival, they visited the Fire Brigade Station, where Fireman Dave Maloney had afternoon tea prepared for their refreshment. All the teams appeared to have enjoyed their trip, though the weather was not of the best. They departed for Denniston with a vociferous tooting of horns. In commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of St John’s Anglican Church, the Wardens have issued a handsome souvenir of the occasion. Its chrono logical notes are very instructive, dating back to 1844, and the portraits of pioneers, clergy, lay readers, etc., are particularly good. The history of the •early struggles of the Church shows tlie spirit of the early prelates was akin to that of the pioneers. Altogether the souvenir will be prized by all adherents of the Church. Examinations at the' School of Mines were held on Friday.

The usual monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. was held on Thursday Jn the Presbyterian Church, and took the form of a cradle roll social. Mrs Henderson provided the entertainment with a company of twelve little ones, who contributed songs, recitations, and duets. The children were a credit to their teacher, and every item was enjoyed by those present. Mrs Nelson resigned her position as Secretary owing to leaving the district. Mrs Marr expressed the regret of members at the loss sustained by her departure. Mrs Toole was appoint-

ed Secretary. The children were entertained to tea, and by all appearances thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Mr Phillips, who arrived in Westport on Thursday from Christchurch., left for Nelson on Saturday morning.
