AUCKLAND LEAGUE TEAM. Outclass Coast. BY 42 TO 15. Auckland had a very easy win over the local representatives at the Recreation Ground yesterday, being superior in every position. The visiting forwards, once the ball was loose, were al] backs, and with Dufty joining in, the whole thirteen were -often in fullsail for the home line. Auckland were well supplied with the ball, Summers raking very cleanly and quickly, while Mclntyre got the ball away very smartly, and the inside backs—Pren-
- five, Wetherill and List made hacks of . our insiders. Wilson showed speed • and initiative in the first half, Little having more to do in the second spell : and doing everything asked of him. The Coast were outclassed both in speed, and in generalship and stamina ami they played just as well as they were allowed. One would class S. Davis as the best local back, whilst Goodall and Grilliths did nest of the forwards. Ib’r L. Hunter had charge of the game, and kept the play going, and while minor infringements of no advantage were allowed to pass, the result was a fast spcctular game. THE GAME. Auckland Avon th ' toss, ami Coast kicked off towards the town. Auckland replied with a movement on the right wing, Little being forced out on the quarter Jim*. From the scrum, Mclntyre set going his backs, Prentice, Wetherill, List, and Avhen Wilson received he shOAvcd a rare burst of speed, and crossed at tl’,e opposite corner to, that whore the movement started. AUCKLAND 5 COAST 5. From a scrum near half-way, O’Brien dribbled through. Dodds saved, ami cleared to Duftv, who slipped on the cricket pitch as he Avas kicking, the ball going out on the full. Auckland pressed, Kennedy kicking to Wilson ,Avho sidestepped McElwee and Pinn, and scored very close to the corner. Duftv failing to conAUCKLAND 8 COAST 5. Little av.-is next conspicuous Avith a good run up the line from a blind side pass. Pinn relieved by a kick into touch at the twenty five. Then Little went over from the* scrum, easily boating Kennedy and Finn, and scoring near the corner flag. Dufty failed with the kick. AUCKLAND 11 COAST 5. S. Davis’s drop out Avas taken by A. McElwee down the light Avir.g, avlio threw a bad pass to Griffiths, a possible chance being lost. Auckland Avere penalised for not allowing the ball to be properly played, and C. McEhvee missed a shot from fairly easy position at tin 1 quarter liife. From a scrum in the Auckland naif, the ball was kicked to Dufty who ran his backs into position, Wilson being Avell tackled by Pinii. Auckland kept up the pressure, Prentice Wetherill, List and Wilson handling Avell. Wetherill jammed Little too near the touch, but the latter side stepped ami eventually got over only to lose the ball. From the drop out, .Dufty took things too •easy, ami was tackled in possession. Goodall got the ball and booted down the field, and Petrie folloAved up, but kicked it into touch. C. (Mcllwee cut through the opposing inside backs, but Austin, who backed him up, just failed to reach the pass. Auckland backs snapped up, and attempted to pass, but Goodall intercepted, ami after a short run, grubberkicked past Dufty. Griffiths Avon the race to the ball, and scored in a handy position. ' C. McElwee converted. AUCKLAND 11 COAST 10. From the restart, the bell Avas snapped from a loose ruck by Wetherill, avlio slung out a loav pass to O’Brien. Avho transferred to Prentice, who gave the ball to Payne, and he ran over in the corner. Dufty missed Avith the kick. AUCKLAND 14 COAST 10 Some very fine jmssing and repassing by the visiting back ami forwards let Wilson away, A. McElwee pushing him into touch. Goodall put in a good run down the side line, but Avas unsupported, Hutt bringing the Buller player doA\*n. Dufty received from a clearing kick, and ran Mclntyre into his stride, Avho jigged his Avay through a crowd of fonvards, and gathered the backs round him before passing Avide to Wilson, Avho had a clear run to the corner. Duftv again failed to convert AUCKLAND 17 COAST 10 A. Mdlwee was penalised for sloavness in playing the ball, Hands pushing the ball back into Auckland territory, Dufty there saving and also tackling Goodall in the corner. From the scrum, Coast hooked the ball travelling across to Stan Davis, avlio fooolishly tried a left-foot pot at goal Avhen he had two .supports waiting for ball with a. fair chance of scoring. The ball went under the bar. Halftime Avas called Avith the scores. AUCKLAND 17 COAST 10.
Auckland restarted, Coast handling the ball well. Grilliths took the ball and passing ensued betAveen him and Dodds, then to Cust, and inside to Dodds who reached Dufty before passing back to Cust, who was forced out this being the best movement by the Coast so far. Auckland retaliated by on hodox pasing to the open side Wilson reaching half way before being grased. Pinn returned one of Dufty’s kicks into the centre. The full-back suaa' the opening, ami suppopted Prentice, and the latter passed in to Dufty, Avho cut through the inside backs and scored under the posts, and converted the try. AUCKLAND 22 COAST 10. Keeping up the pressure by clever handling, Auckland were nearly in again, C. McEßvee stopping Wilson in the nick of time. Stan Davis cut through the defence nicely, but Avas again unsupported. A nice movement initiated by Prentice saw him draw the defence before passing to List, who beat Cust, and when confronted by Pinn, transferred to Little Avho raced round to the posts. Dufty missed the sitter. (“Was he a trier.”) AUCKLAND 25 COAST 10 The forAvards uoav staged a passing oout on their own, for from the kick-
off, Payne received and after a short run, transferred to Summers Avho passed on to Bass, who flashed, over the line near the posts. Wetherill also missed a “sitter.” AUCKLAND 28 COAST 10 The Coast forwards uoav did a re turn stunt, passing by Hansen, Goodall and McElwee made a lot of ground. McElv-’e > hung on ami Avas bundled into touch. Goodall came away from the scrum ami gained further ground. Dodds eventually putting the Coast right into the coiner from a penalty for play the ball infringement. Auckland forwards rushed to half way. where Kinsella dropped a pass from the ruck. Wetherill snapped up, and sidestepped Kinsella, got clean away down the touch line beating Kennedy and Pinn Aery easily, ami scoring in the corner. DufW failed to convert. AUCKLAND 31 (’OAST 10 Wetherill again got going, passing to Dufty—Avho came into the threequarter line in ivory passing bout—and tl.e big full-back cut through ami gave to Payne, Avho lost the ball when clear. Coast relieved through good forward play by Goodall and Hands. Kinsella joined in, but Prentice snapped the ball from their toes, and was almost over at the opposite corner, after passing by visiting backs and , forwards. Wilson converted Avith a great kick. AUCKLAND 36 COAST 10. Keeping up the pressure, Auckland, went right back to the Coast lines. List running through to Kennedy, when he transferred to Little. Avho got over the line but could not ground the ball, being held in a tight embrace by Pinn, Avho Avas underneath ami got tire leather from him. Pinn had to play the ball. List going OA’er OAving ,to very Aveak tackling by the Coasters. Wilson missed the goal. AUCKLAND 39 COAST 10 Coast rushed to Auckland end, a force down resulting. From the new rule drop-out from the line Dufty’s kick Avent into touch on the full, the ball being scrummed on the line. Coast hooked the ball, ami passing among 'the inside backs ensued the oval being dropped. Goodall Avas handy, and snapped, it up, going over under the posts C. McElavoo converted. AUCKLAND 39 (’OAST 15. Wilson Avas prominent from the kick off, putting in a good run before passing to O’Brien, to Summers, Avho got off-side, the penalty being placed into touch, near half Avay. From the scrum Mclntyre passed to Little on the blind side, and he threw a long pass to Wetherill in the centre of the ground, Avhereupon the five-eight raced to the opposite corner and scored. The Coasters Avere left behind in this movement. Wilson failed to convert. AUCKLAND 42 COAST 15. Time was almost up, and Coast rushed to Auckland quarters to be repulsde by a long kick from Dufty, the ball going almost from end to end, and being smartly followed up by O’Brien and the kicker. O’Brien got to it, and in-passed to Dufty avlio raced for the coiner, Avb.erc C. McElwee just got up in time to push him into touch. The Avhistle Avent for the close of play, l aving Auckland Avinners by twenty seven points, viz Auckland 42 Coast 15. CURTAIN-RAISER SCHOOL REPS (41) v. MARIST V (5) The School-boy reps Avere in fine form in the curtain-raiser, and prompted the hope that in a few years Ave Avill have players Avho Avill support the man with the ball, and not keep it at every available opportunity.
