IRISH ELECTIONS.
LONDON ANTICIPATIONS. DE VALERA UPSETS THEM. LONDON, September 1. The Free State nominations close on Saturday, when the shortest and bitterest campaign in Ireland’s history begings. The parties arc frantically grouping themselves with a view to the avoidance of waste voting power, necessary under proportional representation. Mr Cosgrave succeeded in reducing the number of independent candidates but the Farmers’ Party which had five seats in the late Dail refused to amalgamate with Mr Cosgrave, but is advising its supporters to give second preferences to the Cosgravites. The latter will probably nominate a hundred, the Farmers’ Party 28, and the De Valcraites 80. Labour, which is admittedly financially weak is reducing the nominations compared with June. Mr Johnson emphatically denies that Labour is in anywise allied with the De Valeraites. On the whole no striking turnover of the votes is expected. Two Dublin Conservative papers forecasts give Cosgrave fifty-fifty share of the seats which will mean only the narrowest margin of safety. J
