Mr J. Finlay, of the Railway Department, who for the past four years has been stationed at Ngahere, has resigned from the service to take a position at Rewanui.
Among recent arrivals staying at the Albion Hotel are: Messrs A. Cresswell, H. Jones, W. T. Tregurtha, A. D. Baggs, P. Knox (Christchurch), T. Hawkes (Blenheim).
The engagement is announced of Dorothy Booth, M.B.Ch., Kumara, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Booth, Dublin, to Frank Griffith, son of Mrs E. Y. Simpson, Teremakau, Westland.
The many friends of Mr D. J. Mettrick, late of the Club Hotel, Blackball, will regret to learn of his being ill. Mr Mettrick has entered the Christchurch Hospital, in order to undergo on Monday, a serious operation.
A Masterton wire reports that Mr William Gillespie, commission agent, was found dead in his office this morn ing, where he slept after working late last night.
A Press message from Christchurch states that Mr B. E. Dyson, Manager of J. J. Niven and Co., Ltd., Christchurch died on the way to hospital as the result of an explosion while trying a new burner on an oil-burning furnace. Nobody else was injured.
Guests staying at Revington’s include: Messrs H. E. Bennet, G. Darga Ville, G. Orr, W. C. Edwards, Read, Gillham, G. Clark, J. S. Lee (Christchturch), Mcßeathe (Dunedin), J. A. Redpath Williams (Wellington). Mr G. Bertinshaw, Reilway Inspect ing Engineer (Christchurch), accompanied by Mr J. McNair, Railway District Engineer, is inspecting the Midland and West Coast lines, and will probably reach Greymouth early next week. Miss F. I. Broad, who has been a member of the staff of the local branch of the National Bank for the past 12 years, has received notice of her transfer to New Plymouth. Misa Broad is an accomplished pianist, and her departure from Greymouth will be greatly regretted in musical circles.
In view of his approaching marriage, Mr Ashley Warnes was recently presented by the United Football and Cricket Clubs with a silver tea service. In making the presentation, Mr G. Kear (President of the United Football Club) extended best wishes to Mr Warnes and his bride-elect, his remarks being endorsed by Messrs T. Ryan. M. and P. Jamieson, N. Jones, A. Fass and B. Dowell (Hokitika). Mr Warnes suitably responded. On Wednesday evening a pleasing function took place at tht residence of Mr and Mr W. Ferguson. Cowper St., the occasion being the coming of age nf their daughter, Rona. Over forty guests were present, and the evening was pleasantly passed with dancing and musical items. Prior to the cutting of the birthday cake, Mr Ferguson presented his daughter with a silver key, with a autograph book attached, signed by all present. Miss Ferguson was recipient of many beautiful presents and received telegrams, conveying congratulations from all parts of the Dominion.
The Blenheim centenarian, Mrs Johanna Casey, whose death was recorded on Wednesday in a Press Association telegram, was the grandmother of Mr Bernard Ryan, of Greymouth, manager for the firm of Messrs Wilson and Canham. The late Mrs Casey, who came to New Zealand from Ireland close on seventv vears ago with her late husband, ‘Martin Casey (whose death occurred about six years ago) reared a large family, one of her daughters having been Mr B. Ryan’s mother, and although her age was stated to be one hundred and two years, her relatives believed it to have been as much as four years greater. She was a remarkably old lady, maintaining till the end a wonderfully keen interest in what went on around her, and she could recall New Zealand’s earliest history in a most entertaining manner.
