“MIKADO” JAZZED UP.
Berlin Version of Opera. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn). BERLIN, September 1. Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Mikado” brought up to date, was presented in the form of a revue' at Grosses Schauspielhaus. Nankipoo wearing Oxford bags, sky blue double breasted brass buttoned' blazer, represented a son of an American sugar king, whom his father desires to marry Katisha, daughter of a Fruit King, to enable a Marmalade Trust to be formed.. The performance was interspersed with dancing and gymnasties by the American Jackson Boys in sailor’s garb. Yum Yum and her companions gave an ample display of western silk garments beneath their kimonos, when the curtain rises in Yum Yum’s apartments; one of the ladies in attendance, who has apparently stepped out of a bath stand', with her back to the audience making the finishing touches with a large powder puff. The music is oftened jazzed and ballets introduce the Charleston. Only the most pious Savoyan would object to the changes. Others laugh and enjoy it, if with a sign of regret.
