YANGTZE BATTLE.
NORTHERN REVERSE. With 30,000 Losses. (Aus. andN.Z, Cable Assn). SHANGHAI, Sept. 1. Local Nationalist authorities state that two divisions of the Southerners crossed the Yangtze, and drove out the Northerners, and reoccupied Pukow, silencing the artillery which had been bombarding Nanking in the past week. They claim that they killed, wounded or captured over 3 ,000 Northerners in the recent fighting, disarmed 40,000 and scattered the rest. British warships anchored at Nanking confirm a retirement of the Northerners at that point, owing to the menace to their line of communications by Hankow troops advancing through Northen Ankwei, but other reports state that a large body of Northerners are still in the soutli bank of the Yangtze, preparing to attack Nanking. HONG KONG, Sept. 1. A sequel to the piracy of the British ship Yatshing on the high seas by Chinese, who boarded her at Swatow, as passengers, taking the ship to Bias Bay, landing booty and taking hostages, occurred when a British naval punitive expedition, consisting of the warships Hermes, Danae, Sirdar an Foxglove raided the pirate lair and inflicted severe punishment.
