FLOOD CATASTROPHE.
IN POLAND. Two Thousand Homeless. HEAVY MORTALITY. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn). WARSAW, September 2. A cloudburst and the persistently heavy rain caused tremendous damage. Already twenty persons have been drowned, crops swept from the fields, several oilfields cut off and work ceased. It is feared the wells are severely damaged. Troops were utilised to persuade the inhabitants at Stryj to evacuate the tow n. Disastrous floods have occurred in Galicia and in various Polish districts. A hundred and fifty deaths arc reported during the Galician floods. Bridges across the San and Dniester rivers collapsed. Railways arc torn up and mines flooded. Dozens of villages arc inundated. Przemyal was severely damaged, and extensive stocks of oil at Drobyez were destroyed. 1 (Received September 2 at 8.40 p.m.) It is estimated that one hundred and eighty persons are dead, and that ten thousand people are homeless and destitute in the track of the devastating floods. The damage amounts to one million sterling. Small towns have been completely destroyed. It is still raining heavily. The Polish Government is rushing relief measures. Aeroplanes have participated prominently in hazardous rescues.
