THE COMPETITIONS.

Keen Interest Continues. The Competitions were continued yesterday when the interest in which they are held by the general public was well demonstrated by the large attendances that were in evidence during the day. , - The results for the day sessions were as follows: — Senior Men’s Sight Reading; Mr I. Nelson, (72 points) 1; Mr W. P. McCarthy (68 points) 2; Mr C. O’-Neil, (65 points) 3. Highly commended. — A. Parkinson, W. McGrath. P. McGrath and W. Giesking. Also competed Messrs H. Jamieson, L. Anderson P. Williamson, C. Carmine, M. Keating, T. Learmont, J. H. Keddie, W. D. Murray, H. Trouland and D. M. Robertson.

The’piece set contained many words of the variety known as “Jaw Breakers” but the majority of the entrants came out well. The judge reminded the competitors that pronunciation was not the main thing in a reading interpretation counted for more. He advised his rearers to do more reeding at home, and any words they found they were in doubt about to refer to a dictionary. Clubs should inaugurate monthly meetings at which readings should be given by members, and to have someone to judge the readings. It must be remembered that a casual glance would not give the correct pronunciation, the words should be looked into carefully.

Doogan. The Judge recalled Messrs W. McGrath, I. Nelson and P. Williamson, and highly commended W. Gieseking, P. Doogan, E. Hill, C. O'Neill, W. P. McCarthy, T. Learmont, J. McGrath, and D. M. Robertson, stating that the section was an. excellent one.

Recitation, “A Little Life;” boys under 9.—The competitors were: Ron. McMaster, Roy Larsen, Jack Dwyer, Alan Wingham, John Affleck, Tim O’Fam 11, Ronnie Fass, Billy McGrath, Teddy McDonnell, Pat McGrath. Alan Moss, D. Kingham, R. Byall, E. KeatO. Dwyer, K. The Judge remarked that he was delighted with this section, and commended all the performers. EVENING RESULTS.

The evening session of the Competition was well attended, the hearty nature of the applause showing the appreciation which the audience felt for the various classes. Results: — Pianoforte Solo “To the Spring,” (Final):—Hazel Lawn, 92pts 1; Gwen Jacobs 81pts 2; Monica Walshe, 79pts 3. The Judge remarked that in this section, the performers had not merely concerned themselves witli technique but had endeavoured to interpret the piece. Ladies’ Shakesperean Recitation, “As You Like It” (Final:— Miss A. Bush, 75pts 1; Miss K. Fogarty, 73pts 2; Miss N. Hopkins, 72pts. 3. The winner gave the best characterization of the piece. The Judge said that some of the competitors had placer, their characters in the audience, this was a mistake —performers should always place their characters to the left and right when giving a portrayal. Impromptu Debate. Men 21 years ami over. “That children of thirteen years and under should not be perm’tted to attend picture theatres.” Jhe pairs were:—Messrs W. Murray and C. Carmine; W. P. pts 2; Miss N. Hopkins “A Spirit Flower,” 77pts 3. This was a very good section, only ten points separating the winner and the competitor with the lowest marks. Violin Solo “Salut D’Amour” (Final): —Miss Mary Martin 78pts, 1; Misses JSF. Fletcher and M. Coburn, 77 pts. 2. In this section, the Judge remarked that the female competitors had given better renderings than the males. The tone in general was not what it might have been. In some cases, however, the instruments handicapped performers to a certain extent, as one competitor might have a better instrument than another. Men’s Shakesperian Recitation, “Othello” (Final): —Mr I. Nelson 82 pts 1; Mr W. McGrath 80pts 2; Mr P. McGrath 77pts 3. Mr J. Grcenslade and Mr C. O’Neill were also recalled. The Judge remarked on the good renderings given in this class. The winner had entered into the spirit of the piece better than the other finalists. Men’s Prepared Reading “Gallipoli,” over 21:—Mr P. Williamson BC> pts 1; Mr W. McGrath S 3 pts 2; Mr I. Nelson 80pts 3. The Judge said this’ had been the most enjoyable class of I 'the competitions. Mr Williamson had given a fine rendering of the reading.
