A Dunedin Press telegram states the death is announced of Mr Peter Hercus, eldest son of the late Mr G. R. Hercus. His death occurred yesterday after a short illness. He was born j and educated in Dunedin, and com* menced his business life in Murray, Roberts and Co, later being made Secretary of Wright, Stephenson and Co, which position he vacated in 1908 to go on a trip to England and America. On his return he joined the firm of Barr, Leary and Co, later becoming a partner in the firm of Barr, Hercus and Co. In 1924 he was appointed Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, which position he held till the day of his death. He leaves a widow. Princess Lowenstein Wertheim, the first woman to attempt a flight over the Atlantic Ocean, who left with the famous airmen Minehin ano Hamilton, on the plane Saint Raphael, for the first flight over the ocean from east to west, is not a German, as her name would suggest. She is an Englishwoman, whose husband died fighting for Spain against America in the Span-irh-American War. She some time ago reclaimed her British nationality. She provided the Fokker plane St Raphael for this expedition, and financed the whole * venture. Before she set out from Upavon, in Wales, the Princess (says a cable) besought the blessing of the Catholic Archbishop of CardiffIt was feared the task of crossing all the way from Wales to Ottawa in one lap would prove the most difficult aerial task yet essayed.
