BOAKES TO BE TRIED. FOR MURDER. (Per Press Assn.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 1. Boakes was committed for trial on a charge of Murder. MAGISTRATE’S COMMENT. Charles William Boakes, aged 37. taxi driver, was to-day committed for trial on the charge of having murdered Ellen Gwendolene Isobel Scarff, on or about June 15th. ‘‘l have come to the conclusion,” said Mr Mosley, S.M., to-day “that the evidence passes more than a mere suspicion, and that accused must be committed for trial.” The Magistrate thanked both conn sei and the police for their assistance in the proper presentation of a difficult case. GIRLS’ MOTOR ESCAPADE. AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. Having purchased a broken-down car on the hire purchase system, two 'adventurous girls of eighteen, recently came overland from Waipukurau to Auckland. They were found by the 'police at 3 o ’clock yesterday morning in Chancery Lane, where they ha<i parked the car. Magistrate Hunt observed to-day, when they were charged with being idle and disorderly, that they ha J been joy-riding, having bought a car by making a small deposit, and paying 5s a week off it. One girl is a Wellingtonian*'- and the other belongs to W aipukurau. The case was adjourned till September Sth. The girls meantime were handed to the care ox Major Gordon, Salvationist, and the Woman Probation Officer.

.STIFF FINE FOR MOTORIST. AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. Thomas Harold Cotter, 49, Auckland, business man, owner of a car which careered backwards in Symonds Street on Tuesday night, and crashed through the window of a millinery establishment, was to-day ordered by Mr Hunt, S.M., to pay a fine of fifty pounds, and had his driver’s license cancelled for twelve months, on a charge of intoxication whilst in charge of a motor car.

ARREST FOR HOUSEBREAKING. September 1. As the result of four houses being broken into and small sums of money and other articles taken, the police today arrested at Woodville, Henry Beaumont, alias McKay, who will be charged there to-morrow with breaking, entering and theft. The total value fo the appropriations from the residences is not yet known. ‘PALMERSTON N., Sept. 1. Appearing before Justices at the Police Court this morning, Andrew McEwan, a middle-aged labourer, was charged, on the information. of his wife, at present living at Woodville, with theft of sundry articles of furniture and clothing of the total value of £5 . It was stated in evidence that the parties separated at the end of March. The wife closed her home here, and went to Woodville. Returning later, she found the articles had disappeared. Defendant several times visited the house, a carter taking away a kapoc mattress, while a pawnbroker slated that defendant sold him sundry household effects and articles of jewellery in June. Defendant was committed for trial. WELLINGTON, Sept. 1. In the case in which Benjamin SemelofE claimed £6575 from ’he City Corporation, for property taken by the Corporation at the junction of Taranaki, Wallace and Hankey Streets, the Compensation Court entered judgment for the claimant for £1250, in addition to £2141 already paid by the Corporation, for discharge of mortgage, and £2lB paid in respect of rates. The Corporation was ordered to pay £BO costs and Court fees to be fixed bv the Registrar. Each party was ordered to pay its assessor’s fees, £l5 15s.
