Made to a Girl. BY UNWELCOME SUITOR.. (Per Press Assn.) NEW PLYMOUTH, August 31. “It might look as if I were a murderer because of the production of this carving knife in Court. I used to sit down after tea to write my letter to Mavis, and one night, when J was looking for smething to say, my eyes fell on the knife, and I wrote about it.” Stanley Reid Amies Wood made this statement when charged in the Police Court on eight counts with sending threats to kill. The letters were addressed to Mavis Lilian Mac Kinder, aged twenty. Both lived at .wood, Wood’s house overlooking the girl’s backyard. According to evidence, Wood, a bachelor, living on a pension, had paid attention to the girl without any encouragement, for two years. He had sent her numerous gifts, varying from three sums of £25 to a gramophone and a sewing machine, none of which was accepted. After an eTgtfHi letter, threatening to murder the girl, the police wer® informed. The accused was not represented by counsel. The Magistrate entered a plea of not guilty for him, and committed him to the Supreme Court for trial.

Murders by Motb;r. FAMILY ATTACKED ASLEEP. (Received August 31 at 10 p.m.) BRISBANE, August 31. In a demented state, a woman at Breakfast Creek, Brisbane, is believed to have attacked her husband and two children, cutting their throats with a razor, while they were' asleep in the early morning. Then she cut her own throat. A girl of eight months died. A boy was seriously injured, b’}* the husband and wife were only slightly hurt.

Evan Clark, who was concerned in tho murders of the two detectives at Kalgoorlie last year, has, by the judgment of the High Court been granted £lOOO for the information given by him leading to the conviction of the murderers. SYDNEY MURDER. SYDNEY. August 31. McPherson was found guilty to-day of the murder of Martha Quin. He was sentenced to death.
