WAIUTA NOTES.
(Our Own vo’-rxpondent). \ Mr. J. Dwyer, who has been confined to his bed for the past week is making good progress towards recovery. Sickness among children is very prevalent here at present. This is due no doubt to the changeable weather. Probably the over-crowded state of the local school has something to do with it too. The Spinsters’ Ball, which was held in the Miners.’ Hall on Saturday evening, was a brilliant success. Great credit is due to Miss M. Kerridge (Secretary) and her energetic committee, for the manner in which the arrangements were carried out. Visitors were present from Grcymouth, Ikamatua and the surrounding districts. The hall was tastefully decorated with ferns and coloured lights. Supper was served on the stage, and the music was supplied by Everybody’s Orchestra (Greymouth) and lovers of the light fantastic, are eagerly looking forward to a return visit from this talented com bination. It is understood that they have been engaged for the Bachelors’ Ball. Mr. W. Murtha (Ikamatua) capably carried out the duties of M.C. Among the many beautiful frocks worn were:—Mcsdames R. A. During the veiling extras were played by Mrs Ord, and Misses Kerridge and Blomquist. Waiuta League juniors journeyed to Blackwater yesterday to meet the Reef ton juniors. For some reason or other the Reefton team failed to put in an appearance. A scratch match was played, however, which caused considerable amusement to the spectators. In connection with the above fixture, no notification was received by the local Club of a match until Friday evening. Surely the Centre could notify Clubs earlier of the fixtures. The following will represent Waiuta against Rcefton at Reefton on Sunday next in the final of tho Flannigan Cup Competition:—A. Pul-ton, 11. Thorn, J. Burns, R. Curnow, S. McCarthy, E. Cameron, E. Woolhouse, J. Reid, R. Davis, J. Uren, D. Costigan, E. Byrne, A. Malloy. Emergencies: J. Quinn, R. Morrissey. The team as selected is a good one and should give a good account of themselves. Intending visitors to Reefton to see this match should hand in their names to the Secretary, who will arrange for cars.
A few comments on the players:— A. Purton (full-back) has improved the last two games; was inclined to wait for the bounce, but now playing witli better judgment. F. Thorn (wing): A good strong attacking player with more experience will make good. J. Burns (centre): One of the safest backs in the competition. Handles well and very safe. K. Curnow (wing): A good tackler, but inclined to weak in defence. 71. Cameron (five-eighths): A very co 1 heady player. Will go far in the
game. S. McCarthy (five-eighth): Very safe inclined to hand on too long. Throw the ball out “Mac.” E. Woolhouse (half): Easily the best half in the competition, gets rid of the ball and has a powerful boot. R. Davis (hooker): A hard head. Knows the game from A to Z. Has represented Hawke’s Bay and West Coast at Rugby. J. Reid (forward): A great hardworking forward; always in the tight stuff. J. Uren (forward): Another goo i toiler; inclined to appeal rather much. E. Byrne (forward): Formerly played on the wing, now playing good football. Follows up well and a deadly tackler. Has heaps of speed. A. Malloy (forward): Plays well at present, carrying rather a little too much condition. Get into training Arthur. D. Costigan (forward).: Has improved this season; formerly known as th? “Off-side King”. Keep on side “D.J.P.” On Saturday evening next after the pictures the League Club will hold a dance at which the handsome shield donated by Anisy Bros, will bo presented to ■ <l, ' The shield is a j •' fine piece of work.
