WESTPORT NOTES.
(Our Owq Correspondent.) WESTPORT, July 11. The Committee of the Maternity Ward Fund worked wonderfully well on Saturday, the Paddy’s market, bran tubs, and street collections bringing in the handsome sum of £9l. Those working in the country have, of course, not had time to send their returns in. It reflects great credit upon all those concerned, and, despite the outcry of hard times, shows the sympathy the general public have for the object aimed at. The next move in regard to this matter is the production of “Mariotte,” which the promoters aver will be on a scale never excelled, the rehearsals being so well attended that those participating may be quoted as being letter perfect. Mr Thompson, conductor of the Municipal Band, has taken charge of the Orchestra, which speaks volumes for that part of the programme. The photos of a large proportion of the kiddies engaged in the Juvenile Recital to be held next Friday evening a* Victoria Theatre were on exhibition in many windows in town on Saturday. As showing how forward the producer, Mrs Marshall Neill, is with the production, it is observable that the costumes, etc., arc all complete. Mr F. Morgan reports that bookings are taking place steadily, but from former experience of juvenile entertainments held in Westport, those who wish to enjoy the performance by having a good view and a comfortable seat should book early. At a certain function last week the clergyman said the Grace ami then seated himself beside a little boy, son of a member of his congregation. The youngster knew him pretty well, and struck up a conversation. “That’s not the sort of Grace father says.” “No? What sort does father say ? ” “ Father generally says, I Good Lord, what a meal! ’ ” Mr James Jamieson, of Hamilton, lias arrived in Westport upon business connected with mining ventures in the district. His stay is likely to be brief. Mr F. Turley blew into Westport on Saturday. He is on his usual round of the sawmills of the district. At Ngakawau yesterday, Stockton Soccer team beat Westport by 3 goals to 2.
Miss Rita Coleman, who has been on relieving duty at Newman’s office, Westport, leaves on return to Nelson to-day. Miss Ngairo Marshall was admitted to the District Hospital on Friday. The Reefton Golf Club has been able to secure the services of Mr D. McKinlay, golf professional, from the Westport Golf Club for a week from Tuesday next. Col. Austin, Inspector of Technical Schools, is paying a visit to V estport for the purpose of inspecting the Technical High School. A Company has been formed in Wellington having for its object the successful treatment of enormous areas of gold bearing black sand deposits existing on the West Coast beach near Charleston. The provisional patent rights have been secured. It is an electrical process which is claimed to extract the gold from the sand with good profit. In the course of a few days several members of the syndicate will proceed to Westport in furthering the proposal. The operations will start in the Charleston district. Mr G. M. Powell (Secretary of the Hospital Board) states there are 100 acres of laud near Charleston carrying gold worth £200,000. The General Exploration Company and also other Companies sampled the ground with a view to cyaniding, but found the process too kdear. Since then cyaniding has cheapened, and now probably it would pay. Two or three years ago an attempt was made to sluice it, but it was found too U A d ’very successful card tournament was held in the Friendly Societies’ Hall in honour of the West Coast footballers. Footballers turned up in good force and a very pleasant time was spent. GRANITY POULTRY SHOW. The prizes won at the 21st.
