HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, July 11. The work being laid off by the County Overseer between Lake Mahinapua and Ruatapu is expected to give the idle mill workers in that vicinity something to do while their industry is at a standstill. The mill at Ruatapu is, however, to utilise the interval to improve its apparatus for the production of a larger output in the near future, so the cloud must have a silver lining. A peculiar form of sickness, attributed to the colder weather, is here prevalent in varying forms, there being in some instances pains felt in the back, and in others the distress occasioned is in the abdominal region. The Soldiers’ Hall on Wednesday evening should present a gay scene, on the occasion of the annual Hibernian Ball. Among lovers of the light fantastic, it is the chief to|)ic at present. The "warmer conditions to-day prompt the hope of an early spring. In some districts up north lambs have already made their appearance, and this is an indication of warmer weather. The shop • has been beautifully fitted up, and a great display of electrical devices of all descriptions is being made. Patrons will find the very latest of electrical appliances fully displayed. The farmers are looking forward to the visit of the Canterbury excursionists this month. While on the other side, a line of stock that attracted interest among the Coasters were the horses at Grigg’s famous Longbeacn Estate, where* thirty-five magnificent Clydesdale horses were seen at work. Their ages ranged from 5 to 12 years, and it was pointed out that the older beasts were as fit for hard work as were the younger ones. Appreciative eyes were cast upon these animals, and more than one West Coaster expressed a desire for a few c.f that stamp ot horse on the Coast. In two pens near the horses were several Friesian s, the performance of which as butter-fat producers were related to the visitors, who arc mostly dairy farmers. The fgures quoted by Air Grigg were noted by more than one man from the Coast. Sheep raisers were particularly taken by the Romney Southdown sheep on Vl Messrs Wiley and Green, reprcsentincr the underwriters on the Hokitika Fire Board, have written to the Chairman (Hon IT. L.
