(Our Own Correspondent). July 3. Snow and severe Aveather are holding up the rabbiting operations. A meeting of residents was held last week to discuss community matters. The local White Star horse service have already all their available animals booked up for the Christmas and New Year Aveeks. Tt is likely young English brown trout Avill be packed over the Pass for liberation in the Haast and Clarke Rivers. The lower portion of this main river is alreadv well stocked. A few salmon have also been seen. There has been a move by the Westland Acclimatisation Society to liberate opossums on a large scab* in the South Westland forests in the vicinity of the Haast Pass. The Society are aAvaiting tin* permission of the Department of Internal Affairs. If it had been favourably entertained, it was contemplated procuring fresh blood from Southland. Tasmania and the Australian mainland. The trapping of these useful animals has been the means of giving employment to hundreds of trappers and a source of considerable revenue to the Government.
