TECHNICAL SCHOOL HOSTEL.

FOR TECHNICAL STUDENTS. The preliminary work of constructing the foundations of the new Tech ideal School Hostel is now well in hand. The site of the hostel io situated on the left side of the southern port .on of iTigh Street (unformed), in close proximity to the Old People's Home. The extreme dimensions of the hostel are 120 feet 6 inches by 102 feet, the building being planned, so fur as the exterior is concerned, almost exactly similar to the Technical School itself. The building has been designed to allow the greatest possible amount of sunlight to reach each room, the two long dormitories which project at right angles from the main block being particularly well situated in this respect. The front elevation, which is .102 feel Jong, faces the south. In the centre portion of the main bniiuing is a spa cions dining hall. .‘’>o feet by IS feet. Leading from the hall on either side are the common rooms for the girls iand boys'respectively, teachers’ rooms, staff bedrooms, and the usual conveniences. The dormitories on either siue | are each 46 feet 6 inches by 20 feet, [and have no superstructures. The cen|tral portion of the second storey of the main block is taken up with the I Principal’s quarters —bedroom, study, etc.., on either side of which will be I the servants’ rooms. The kitchen, j scullery and washhouse take the form |of an annexe, situated in the middle of the south side of the main block. This somewhat spoils the outline of the building, but it has apparentlv been planned with a. view to convenience, and has been placed on the outside of the main structure, instead o’f the northern side, so that it might not impede the sunlight on the dining hall. The entire building is to bo constructed of timber, on concrete foundation walls and piles, the total cost being approximately £6OOO. The contract has been undertaken by Mr J. A. Hart, of Arncv Street.
