WAIUTA NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent). Dr Louis Wickeu has been appointed Medical Officer to the Waiuta Miners ; Medical Association. Miss O ’Donnell, who has been on an extended holiday, returned heme on Saturday evening. Reefton and Waiuta League football teams met here in the Flannigan Cup competition on Sunday last, and after an exciting contest Beef ton .won by 21 points to 15. The day was fine, but a cold win was blowing. There was a large crowd of spectators present. Reefton won the toss, and. Waiuta . attacked from the kick-off, and from a mix up Reefton were penalised, Cameron putting the ball over with a good kick. Waiuta 2, Reef ton 0, From u. scrum, Reef ton secured possession, and the ball travelled through the backs. C. McElwee centred smartly, for G. Harris to score. Wright made no mistake with the kick. Rcoltou 5, Waiuta 2. From the kick off Waiuta attacked, McCarthy putting in a good run,. Reefton were again penalised, but Cameron missed with the kick, Reefton forcing. From the drop out Waiuta attacked, but McCarthy spoiled a good chance by hanging on. Things were now looking bad for Reefton, but good defensive play by Gib toy and C, McElwee kept the homo, beam out. Davis (Waiuta) made a great dash for the line, with the ball at his toe. Wright, however, saved cleverly. Reefton were again compelled to force. From a scrum Waiuta obtained possession, a good passing bout .eventuating, being spoiled by a knock on. A penalty against Waiuta gave G. Harris a shot at goal, which he put over with a good kick. Reefton 7, Waiuta 2. I Waiuta again attacked from the kick off, but Wright, who was playing a fine defensive game, sent them back. Waiuta were again making the pace a cracker, and from a good passing bout McCarthy scored. Cameron missed with the kick, ReefLon 7, Waiuta 5. On resuming, Waiuta set up a strong attack, a good passing rush being spoiled by Burns missing his pass. Waiuta came again, however, C. McElwee just saving in the nick of time. From a scrum Waiuta attacked hard, and Davis with one of his characteristic runs bulloekcd his way over. Cameron missed with the kick. Waiuta 8, Reefton 7. Reefton were now hard pressed, and only good play on tjic part of Wright and McElwee kept the line clear. Reefton were penalised for offside play, and Cameron with a grand kick goalecl. Half time was called with the scores: Waiuta 10, Reefton 7. On resuming play Roof ton attacked, and from a forward rush Neilson got over, G. Harris converting. Reef ton 12, Waiuta 10. Up and down play followed, and C. McElwee from halfway drop-kicked a beautiful goal. Reef ton 14, Waiuta 10. Reefton attacked again, and Allison scored under the posts, Wright making no mistake with the kick. Reef ton 19, Waiuta 10. Reeftoon kept up the pressure from the kick off, and a Ipenaity against Waiuta saw Harns goal. Reef ton 21, Waiuta 10. From the ensuing play, mishandling by Allison let Waiuta away, McCarthy scoring under the posts, Cameron converting. Re-dfton 21, Waiuta 15. From now on play was fairly even, although the local team were tiring. Time was called with the scores unaltered. Mr J. H. Baird controlled the game. On the day’s play the best team won. Reefton have now a very solid team, and will be hard to beat in the remaining matches. C, McElwee, Wright. Spillane and Gilroy were outstanding m the backs. The forwards all worked hard, with Harris outstanding. For the local team, McCarthy, Cameron and Burns wore the pick of the backs. The two wingers, Lewis and E. Byrne, were lamentably weak. Davis was the mainstay of the forwards. Next Sunday, Waiuta and .Mawheraiti meet here, and as a curtain-raiser Waiuta juniors play Ikumatua juniors.
