LET OFF LIGHTLY. (Per Press Assn.) GISBORNE, June 18. Henry Grayson and John Simpson, two young men, who put spikes on the Railway line, were placed on probation for twelve months by the Magistrate to-day. WATERSIDER WITH STOLEN CARGO. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 18. At the Police Court this morning, Roy Edward Hayes, a watersider, was fined £25 for being found in possession of uncustomed goods in the shape of six tins of jam, valued at £2 9s, taken from the steamer Port Hardy. WIFE ALLEGES CRUELTY. HUSBAND CHARGED. AUCKLAND, June 18. At the Police Court, John Crane, alias Ivan Kraganich, was remanded on a charge of assaulting his wife, who sought a separation, on the ground of persistent cruelty. Counsel for the wife stated that she was fright ened of her husband, who yesterday got a rope round her neck, and dragged her around the yard, and also threatened to murder her little girl, of which he was not the father. Counsel for the accused said that a different complexion would he put on the matter when the case comes on again. The accused was warned ta keep away from his wife in the meantime. OLD CRIMINAL GAOLED. AUCKLAND, June 18. A smart arrest was made last night I by two acting detectives, whose sus-1 ftverej aroused! by the move-
ments of an old criminal named Thomas Rogers. When apprehended, I he was found to have in his possession la plug of gelignite. Rogers was sent to gaol this morning for three months.
