FRENCH DEPUTY.
Arrest Ordered. FOR COMMUNIST ACTIVITY. (Australian & N. Z. Cable Assn.) PARIS. June IS. Thorn was n debate in the Chamber of Deputies on the subject of an order for the arrest of the Communist Deputy, M. Doriot. It progressed in rnn atmosphere of tension, owing to a ru niour that M. Doriot would make a dramatie entry, but there was no appearance of Doriot, who was last heard of in Moscow. He was sentenced in his absence last year to eighteen months’ imprisonment on a charge of anti-militarist propaganda in connection with the war in Morocco. He still has the right to appeal to court. There is another prosecution pending for alleged treasonable conduct and speeches while on a visit to China. ...
The debate followed the decision of M. Carthou that M. Doriot should be returned to France, but it was nullified by the announcement that M. Doriot' had exercised his right of appeal. Further action was therefore suspended. LONDON, June IS.
Great surprise was caused at a Communist meeting at Paris at which M. Cochin was speaking, when in walked a missing deputy, M. Doriot. On the commotion subsiding, M. Cochin finished his speech. He claimed an amnesty for the deputies against whom proceedings bad been instituted, after which M. Doriot took off bis coat, rolled up uis shirt sleeves, and, amidst prolonged cheering, dealt with the Chinese Revolution and the Syndicalist movement.
