ROSS NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) No longer are Ross residents to suffer the hitherto unchallenged slur that they are too easily satisfied with their small range of sport. Tennis was perhaps late in arriving, but it is here, and here to stay. This game has been taken up with, enthusiasm, and that enthusiasm is not confined to the young people. The beautifully fine, almost summery weather, that so frequently occurs at this period of the year provides several hours in the day. quite suitable for tennis, and enthusiasts of both sexes are making full use of the court even at this advanced season.

The latest move, however, is in the direction of a Hockey Club, and this has been launched with a gratifying degree of success. To inaugurate the season, a match is to be played on Saturday afternoon as a cur-tain-raiser to the football match (Ross v. Excelsior A). Though practically all the players are absolutely now to the game—perhaps because of the newness the match is sure to provide a certain amount of fun. The ladies are to be congratulated upon the movement they have initiated, and a delightful series of contests is confidently looked for.

Two meetings have already been held, at the first of which, on the 10th inst., Mr P. McNabb was Chairman. On this occasion the club was constituted and a membership fee of 2s 6d was fixed. On Monday, the 13th, there was a well attended meeting. The following officers were elected: —President, Mr A. W. Peebles; captain, Miss G. Harkness; vice-captain,’Mrs P. McNabb; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Lock; coach, Mr P. McNabb; committee —Miss I Lloyd, Mrs Trippncr, Miss A. Wright. Miss B. Evans, Miss F. Harkness, Miss P. CJi aimers. Saturday’s match is to be refereed by Mr Ken. May. There is to be a further meeting on Friday evening, when further details will be arranged.

Disappointment met the would-be observers of the total eclipse of the moon. After a long period of beautiful weather, with clear, frosty nights, it was hoped that the phenomenon would be clearly visible, but early in the evening thick clouds veiled the hills to the east, and it was only at long intervals that the moon’s disc was visible through the 5 rifts. At such times, however, the shape of the obscuring umbra was clearly visible.
