(Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, June 17. To-morrow the Mayor, Mr J. H. Harkness, goes to Christchurch to attend the .Progress League Convention. Mrs R. Pearson, of Russell Street, was yesterday successfully operated on for appendicitis at the Westport District Hospital. H. Lockcy was chosen as captain of Buller A hockey team to play Nelson to-morrow, and T. Phibbs as captain of B team.
The Westport Labour Party’s Ball, recently, realised a profit of £32, which has been transferred to the Building Fund, bringing it up to £240. Mrs Mann, just returned from a holiday visit to Australia, is visiting her mother, Mrs Higgins, of Russell Street. At a meeting of the Magistrafe’s Court, before Mr Hewitt, S.M., a first offender for drunkenness was convicted and ordered to pay 2s 6d, cost of taxi.
Edith Hartigan sued Thomas Henry Hartigan for maintenance. An order for £2 a week was made and costs allowed. Fines. of 10s wore imposed on two persons found after hours on licensed premises. George W. Stephenson was charged with failing to register for military training, as required under the Defence Act. Defendant said he was 19 years of age. He had not filled in the form at 14, but had since done so. He suffered from a bad back, the result of a strain. A fine of £2 was imposed. Eric Senior was charged with failing to render the personal service required of him under the Defence Act, in not attending the training camp at Burnham on May 25th, 1927. Mr Branthwaite, who appeared oHi behalf of defendant, said he /suffered from defective eyesight. He was very busy at the foundry. He intended to apply for exemption.. The Magistrate went the length of inflflicting a £5 fine. At Granity on Wednesday, eight defendants were charged with being on licensed premises at Granity and one at Seddonville. Each was convicted and fine 10s costs. Fines were imposed on a man for breach of a prohibition order. The Magistrate dismissed a charge against a butcher for permitting a beast to be on the public road at Ngakawau. He said defendant would have been convicted under the county by-laws, where the word permitting was not used. The Magistrate was satisfied that this was the bullock that was out on the road when a collision occurred with a motor lorry, resulting in the death of a passenger on the lorry. An excellent view of the lunar eclipse was obtained here. At a meeting of the Buller County Council, Mr J. Parsons wrote expressing surprise at the Council’s decision to dispense with his services an sanitary service man at Denniston, and asked permission to attend the meeting and put his position before the Council. He had five years’ service with the Council. The Chairman said the Labour Union wished to address the meeting on behalf of Mr Parsons. Cr Hawes said Parsons had broken service, as he was away for eight months. Messrs Weekes and D. Moloney were the deputation. Mr Weekes said Mr Parsons gave him information, and thev came to the conclusion that the Union must work on his behalf. He had five or six years’ employ, and was on the superannuation fund. He was a man likely to do his work well and correctly, and both the Council and the man would benefit in the end. He had spoken to the Engineer, who knew of no reason why Parsons should be dismissed. He thought the standing orders could be suspended and Parsons re-appointed. He had heard of no reason why Parsons should be dismissed. The Engineer said Parsons was acting under his instructions. Lie explainer, the cause of f rid ion and said it was each of the four surfacemen aad given him cause for concern because of Parsons. A proposal ic consider applications received for the position was carried by 5 votes to 4. Applications for sanitary service man. were received from Parsons, Mullan, Henderson and Parker. A ballot to reduce
the names by tw’o resulted: Mullan 5, Parsons 5, Henderson 4, Parker 2. A final vote taken between Mullan and Parsons resulted: Parsons 5, Mullan 4. Mr Parsons was then duly appointed. Mr W. Lock, Dennislon, President of the United Mine Workers, has left for Greymouth. Mrs Bresnaham has arrived from Greymouth to-day. Miss McCullum, Juvenile Probationcry Officer, has left for Greymouth. Mrs Dunston, Hamilton, is at present spending a holiday with Mrs Walters, Romilly Street. Mr Kirby, accountant, Bank of New Zealand, has returned from his holidays. Mrs Hawkins has returned to Karamea after a visit to Greymouth. Mr C. Kearns, of the Railway Department, Petone, is soon to be transferred to Westport, and he has signified his intention of joining up with the Westport Rugby Football Club The defeat of Buller A hockey team by B’s to the extent of 3 goals to I. was disconcerting to the former, who had not been taking seriously enough
to their training. Yesterday a cyclist who ran over a dog came down with a crash in Palmerston Street, and lay there unconscious until ho was picket! up by Mr L. Johnson and "Mr McKenzie, the latter of Greymouth, and taken into Mr Johnson’s shop. He continued unconscious for some time until Miss Wai sue administered aid.
