HOKITIKA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, June 16.

All Hokitika sports were very pleased at the "reat vistory of the West Coast Soccer representative team over the Canadians who had been expected to win as they pleased. The Soccer code is comparatively new to the Coast, but should now attract greater interest. One remembers the only semb lance of Soccer once in evidence hereabout was when schoolboys agreed to limit play with a Rugby ball to dribbling only. Sometimes a jam tin did duty for the ball. It is rumoured that a new hotel is to be built shortly in the stand where Mr. Joe Fowler now has his temporary Mr. Albert Lawn, who has been -jn the sick list for four months has returned from Wellington, where he has been under treatment.

I learn that the local equivalent of the Carbonari, held on Saturday night last a large meeting at their usual subterranean rendezvous, the occasion being a welcome to the Chief, who had been on the sick list some time as the result of a. chill contracted in the tunnel loading to the cave of the Black Hand which is used by the chief for his advent and exit. No doubt, his errands of mercy will again be in evidence upon his restoration :o health. Mrs T. Mcßride, of Matainui, South Westland, is at present on a visit o Hokitika.

Mr. L. Sullivan, of Weheka, South Westland, is also a visitor to town.

Harihari Sports arranged for 23rd, June have been postponed until Thursday, July 14th.

The Excelsior Rugby Club’s senior team to play Stars at Greymouth jn Saturday are: Nightingale, Tainui, Staines, Houston, Christianson, King, Kinloch, Hahn, Montague, Preston Freitas, Barron, King, Devaney and Gngich. The senior team to represent Kanieri against Magpies on Saturday is as follows: —Thomas, Whiley, Tainui E. Pfahlert, Griffiths, Stopforth, McCleary, C. Pfahlert, Moynihan, Bannis ter, Fleming, Mclntosh, McKenzie. Dougherty. The Golf Club’s Medal Match postponed from last Saturday will be played next Saturday. Entries for the nominated foursome close on Thursday, the 23rd. Mr. A. D. MeGavock, Conservator of Forests, was a passenger from Hokitika by to-day’s express en route to Wellington. On Saturday, commencing at ±1 o’clock, Kokatahi District church people will hold a monster jumble sale In St. Mary’s Club rooms, Hokitika in aid of the church funds. There will be a wonderful display of ducks and fowls all ready for the oven, lamb and mutton, farm produce and home cook ery of that high quality for which the good wives of Kokatahi district are famous.

The sky was not quite so clear here as reported at Greymouth for the lunar eclipse last evening. However, on passing the moon was clearly to. be seen during the advance of the shadow of the earth across its face. As totality approached the light clouds passed close to and over the face of the moon and this to some extent interfered with a clear view. When totality had been reached the clouds increased in and at times prevented a view. The bridge over the Kanieri river on the Lake road has been repaired, the defective decking, stringers and transomes having being renewed. A new gas holder is being installed bv the local Gas Company and a foundation is being excavated for it. The holder will be double the capacity of the present one, and will be of the spiral type. It is being located at the rear of the works. The concreting of the foundation will follow, and the hold er will arrive at the end of the year from England. The Greymouth amateur comedy company staged “Mariette” to a numerous and appreciative audience last night at the local theatre, the house being worth about £6O. The comedy proved to be cleverly composed and was enjoyed by everybody. Mr. L. McGlashan rc turned thanks for the excellent attendance and hearing given, stating the object in view, the Grey Ambulance Fund, would benefit substantially as a result of the performance. He conveyed thanks to all who had assisted, special ly referred to Mr. and Mrs J. J. McIntosh, to whom they were greatly indebted for much assistance. The orchestra added to the effectiveness of the presentation, and a popular innovation was the introduced dance by little Miss Ella Robertson, who was heartily encored. Miss M. Warnes (Patricia Keene), Mr. N. W. Jones (Capt. Bruce Hardy), Mrs E. J. Kiely (Miss Emmeline Hardy and Lieut. Evans), Mr. Graeme Holder, the author, (Hon. Frazer), Mr. Eric Conway (Jeeves), Mr. D. M. Robertson (Capt. Harold Dupont), Miss M. Parfitt (Mariette) all had the most difficult parts and made an excellent showing, the smaller parts being also well filled. The dressing and mounting was a special feature. The local branch of the Forestry Department, of which Mr. A. D. Me-1 Gavock is the conservator, has its nur-

sery about seven miles from Hokitika in the locality known as Back Creek, near Woodstock (says a writer in the Wellington morning paper). In September, 1923, the Department acquired an area of 73 acres in that part of the district, and immediately commenced to prepare and cultivate part of the area for the purpose of experimenting with numerous varieties and in due course seeds were planted, the area thus treated being approximately six acres. To say that the results have exceeded expectations does not adequately describe the success achieved. South Westland matters dealt with by the County Council included -the following: From C. A. Robertson, Harihari, asking for consideration towards bridge approach to residence;from J. J. Mulvaney, Mahitahi, asking for assistance to clean out track to Abbey Rock run.—The Council regretted its inability to assist; from J. Stephens, Harihari, applying for lease of ferry reserve at mouth of Big Wanganui river on the North Bank. —Tenders are to be invited; from C. Nolan, advising Public Works Department has commenced repairs to Turnbull River road, advising minor repairs had been carried out on Okuru dray road; also acknowledging telegram re W. O’Leary’s account for boats to be deducted from McKenzie’s salary, asking that the customary charge at Waitoto and Arawata ferry stand as previously; also advising A. Cowan’s departure from district on extended holiday, suggesting that Eggeling Bros take charge of Lower Okuru feerry in his absence.— Received and approved. Roadman Nolan reported on works for past month, including eleven days’ work on Okarito road, stating Detour road required gravelling a distance of 15 chains; Bird road, holes tilling; Okarito road, holes filling; Three Mile track in good order. —Received. Mr Donovan took exception to the statement that Three Mile track was in good order. The track was not in good order and the approach was in bad order. Roadman Nolan recommended that £7 10s be paid for work done by' Gibb Bros, at Waiho; advising arrangements are being made for restoring wire bridge at Upper Wataroa; start being made with further repairs to Okarito road; advising Richardson road had been badly scoured, and advising river should be diverted. Overseer Millner reported estimating cost of road access required by B. O’Brien, Kokatahi, at £2O; clearing Milltown road £10; Milltown track £l2; Styx track £l5; bridge at Mrs Robertson’s, Harihari (without labour) £5; supplying general report on road works. —Received. No action taken in reference to the first paragraph; the chairman to arrange with Overseer for actual necessities in the next three. The last reference was declined fcy tho Council, the Chairman to refer the request to the Highways Board. He also reported that last month No. 1 motor lorry had carted 573 yards of gravel. 8 other loads, and had graded 9 miles, on 120 gallons; while No. 2 lorry had carted 500 yards of gravel and graded 12 miles of road, on 114 gallons of benzine. —Received.

The Hokitika ana Kunanga Ladies Hockey teams crossed sticks ’ at Cass Square, Hokitika, on Wednesday. The teams lined up as follows:—

Hokitika: A. Stapleton, Morgan, Walker, Butland, Daly’, Hughes, Sumner, Olsen, O. Stapleton, Thompson, Gillooly.

Runanga: Howard, Rose, Garvey, Hewitson, King, Kay, Harrison, N. Little, Wright, Duggan, M. Little.

The teams bullied off at 3.15, and Hokitika pressed from the start, their three inside forwards working well, and they carried the play into the Runanga circle, but they spoiled a good movement by the inside right getting offside. From the free hit Runanga got

away on their left, but were driven back by Miss Butland. who was playing a good game at right-half. Then Hokitika came again, and their outsideright scored a good goal through a crowd of players. Right from the bully Hokitika came again, and scored a second goal through Miss O. Stapleton, who had a good ball-control and took every opportunity. After the bully, Runanga got away, Miss E. Harrison putting the ball well up the line to her outside-right, who spoiled a good movement by over-running the ball. From this Hokitika came again and Miss Thompson worked the ball into the centre for Miss Stapleton to score a third goal. After this goal, the Hokitika forwards got too eager, thus paying the penalty by getting off-side. Then Miss Olsen got a fourth goal, and after the bully the half time whistle sounded with Hokitika leading. Miss M. Little was playing a good game inr Runanga goal, saving her team from a heavier score. From the restart, Hokitika pressed and were in the visitors’ circle for a long time, Miss M. Little saving her team on several occasions. Then Runanga had a spell on attack, pressing Hokitika for a short time, but could not score, as their inside forwards would not follow up in their positions. Then Hokitika went away again and scored a fifth goal. This was the finish of the scoring, and Hokitika ran out winners by 5 goals to nil. Misses M. Little, E. Harrison, M. King and Howard were the best of the Runanga players, and Misses Butland, Morgan, Olsen, O. Stapleton, and Thompson were the best of Hokitika. Messrs I. Guy and H. Crankshaw had control of the game.
