WAIUTA NOTES.

(Onr Ows por respond ent.) WAIUTA, June 16. A disastrous tire occurred here early yesterday morning. The premises of Mrs Woodhouse, draper, and Mr J. McDonnell, billiard saloon and hairdresser, both were totally destroyed. When discovered at 3 a.m. the fire had a strong hold, and owing to the absence of an adequate water supply the building was soon demolished. The Miners’ Hall alongside had a narrow escape, and but for the efforts of a bucket brigade would have been destroyed. The building was owned by Mrs Woodhouse. At time of writing the insurances, if any, are not available. Both occupants of the building, however, will be heavy losers. The origin of the fire is a mystery. A grand benefit concert is to be given in the Miners’ Hall on Saturday, July 23rd, in and of the Cooper family. All the best local talent have been engaged for the occasion. Miss Kerridge, A.T.C.L., L.T.C.L., F.T.C.L., the talented local pianist, is visiting Christchurch, to be present at the recital to be given by Padercwiski, the famous pianist. spending a few days here. Dr R. A. Church, who lias been medical officer to the local Association for a period of two years, has disposed of his practice in Reef ton to Dr L. Wieken. During his term here Dr Church has proved himself very capable, and his departure is to be regretted.

Waiuta and Reef ton League footballers play here Sunday next in tlio Hannigan Cup competition. The local team is in solid training. Charley Pratt, the coach, has charge of training operations. Charley has had a good deal of experience at coaching, and is quietly confident of the local boys winning on Sunday. The game should draw a good crowd of spectators, providing the weather is good. A special general meeting of the Waiuta Minors’ Medical Association is to be held in the Hall on Sunday morning. It behoves all members to roll up, as the business is to appoint a medical officer.

The weather last week was very boisterous, snow falling on Thursday and Friday. This week lias, however, turned out fine, although the frosts are somewhat heavy.

There has been a good number of men seeking work during the last few days. Some have been placed, while others have had to continue on the track.
