MAN’S PROLONGED ORDEAL. ASHBURTON, April 7. Leslie Thompson, ‘musterer, at Mount Potts, aged 32, slipped on the snow falling over a cliff, a fracture of the leg resulting. He lay for sixteen hours in the snow before being discovered. He’ was admitted to the hospital, and is progressing favourably. Thompson fell sixty feet. Owing to the rough nature of the countiy, the rescue party, who found him alter midnight, had a difficult task in bringing him many miles into the station near the head of the Raligitata River. It was twenty-one hours before they were clear of the mountains, and the members were exhausted on reaching the * station. The patient did not reach the hospital until nearly forty hours after the accident. ART UNION DRAWING. Bason, Eden Street, Dunedin; Mrs Aliddleton, Waihola. ANOTHER WAIROA FIRE. WAIROA, April 7. Everybody’s Theatre, a large wooden building on the North Clyde side of the town, was burned to the ground early this morning. The theatre was used for pictures and a dance hall by E. Alunro. A card tournament was held last night, but everything appeared safe when the caretaker locked up shortly after midnight. The fire had a good hold and the building was doomed when the brigade arrived, nothing being saved. Fortunately, there was no wind, otherwise a large block of buildings would have gone. The building was owned by Alalonev’s Estate. The insurances arc as follow: Building, New Zealand Insurance Co. £750; cinema plant, engine, dynamo, films etc., £350 in the Now Zealand Office, £9OO in the Guardian Office and £9OO in the State Office. DUNEDIN’S RATES RAISEDUNEDIN, April 7. The City Council has fixed a total rate for the year of 4/5, against 4/4 last year. This was made necessary i.v the Hospital Board’s demand or £29.. n ffio, which is £8359 more than last voar.
