DISHONOURABLE TRICK.
LONDON, February 17. ►Strong comments were made by Judge Lindley at Taunton Country Court yesterday, in an amazing case over a Derby competition run by a firm of cigarette makers. General Turner sought a declaration that he was entitled to the second prize of £5OO paid by the cigarette makers to Henry Baker. Baker’s trustee in bankruptcy contested the claim. Turner, it was said, had for twenty years made a living by entering for competitions. For this competition he obtained 100,000 coupons, partly by advertising and partly by taking out a tobacconists’s license, buying the cigarettes, and selling the. packet at a reduced price after he had taken the coupons. As one person could win but one prize he obtained nominees to send in coupons. He alleged that Baker, who won second prize, was a nominee, but this Baker denied. Judge Lindley, dismissing the claim, said such method of obtaining a prize was “a dirty and dishonourable trick.” | lie did not know which of the two men I was’committing perjury, and he would consider what steps he would take
