COUNT CAVOUR. SYDNEY, April 7. Count Cavour developed soreness during the voyage across the Tasman. He was given easy exercise at Randwick, where, according to the “Telegraph,” he walked with a particularly short action and did not impress. The “Telegraph” adds: Count Cavour does not appear to have an ounc< of flesh to spare, so it will be interest iug to see how he shapes in training during the next few days.

GENERAL NOTES. Replying to “Early Bird” of trie Auckland Sun, who says that in the Great Easter at Riccarton Rapier is asked to concede Footfall one pound, and in the Great Autumn Footfall has to give Rapier 61b, a Northern writer •says: —“Early Bird” is wrong in bis figures. Footfall is rated 101 b better than Rapier in the Great Autumn. Footfall was giving Kapier 121 b m the Wellington Cup, and there was only about two lengths between at the finish, after the luck of the run had been against the Autumnus gelding. In the Dunedin Cup Footfall was giving Rapier 41b, and the former, on Wellington. Cup form, looked one of thx> nicks of the handicap, and on paper AeM Rapier at his mercy. Rapier fell in the race, but even so Footfall is not badly treated in the Great Autumn so far as Rapier is concerned. In fact Mr Henrys is right,. and “Early Bird” is wrong. The crack pacer Onyx has proven in foal to Peter Chenault and will unally retire to the paddock. Tod Sloan still enjoys occasional publicity and much has been made in the American press of his meeting at Tia Juana with Bobby Jones, the leading American jockey of last season. They exchanged graceful comipl intents over glasses of orange juice at the famous Mexican racing meeting, where the Coffroth Handicap, the “richest race” in the world is run Tod drank to the leading rider of 1926, and Jones replied by quaffing his glass to the “world’s greatest rider.’’ Time does not stay its pro gross for any man—Sloan had com pleted his riding career before Jone was born. The latter last year rod no fewer than 190 winners.

The recent success scored by Power in Sydney marked the twenty-second win by Tractor’s stock. The Martian two-year-old Martarnia may make his debut in the C.J.C Challenge Stakes, in which he will fin! some good trying tackle” in the shape of Agrion. It is stated that Rosenor may rufl race again, but will probably take uj stud work in Southland. R. Alexander has taken up the post tion of private trainer to Air ,J. J Corry’s stable. Although Comic Song has dropped out of the Great Easter, he looks in good shape. The tracks have been v ■ his favour, and consequently supplied an opportunity to give him more work

than usual. The Epsom Handicap winner Amo-' unis has been freely coupled with Limerick, Naos and Tookarby in the Sydney Cup. Two Sydney riders were recently stood down for a month for taking wrong places at the barrier. The Solferino gelding Tommy Dodd is again in work at Mentone after be ing treated to a spell. A cable message from England to Melbourne states that a large shipment of live stock was despatched for Australia by the steamer Suevic. included in the shipment arc the five thoroughbred horses Cottingham, Cynes, Stephanovitch, Indigo and Willy Nilly. The first-named, who is an aged horse, by Lemberg, won at his only three starts last season, the value of the stakes being £1142. Cynos is an aged horse by Argos, the sire of Diomedes, one of the fastest sprinters seen in England in recent years. Cynos had nine starts last season, but was placed only twice\ Stephanovitch Jis a five-year-, old gelding by Stefan the Great, and last season he had only one start. Indigo is also a gelding. He is by ■Friar Marcus, and last year he started nine times and was placed only once.
