REEFTON NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent. COUNTY AFFAIRS. At the Inangahua County Council meeting there were present: Crs. A. M. Carroll (chair), .1. E. Auld, J. O. Byrne, T. Watson, W. Blackadder, J. O’Rogan and E. J. Paine. Crs. O’Regan and Paine moved that Mr John Ross be informed the Council has no objection to him erecting a crate at Brown Creek Road, above tl-.e old Ford.—Carried.
Crs O’Regan and Paine moved that the Public, Works Department be asked to expedite the erection of Boyer’s bridge thus taking advantage of the fine weather.—Carried.
Crs O’Regan and Byrne moved that the engineer confer with the Field Inspector on the matter of diverting Boatman’s creek to its original course. —Carried. Cr Blackadder and the Chairman moved that application be made for authority for Cliff Creek bridge, Maruia Road.—Carried.
Crs Byrne and the Chairman moved that the engineer attend to the road Reading to Waiuta School.—Carried.
Accounts were passed for payment, the financial statement being:—Overdraft at Bank of New Zealand £1241 16s 7d, cheques outstanding £340 6s 2d. accounts £3ll 2s, hospital £152 3s lid, grants £637 16s 2d; present overdraft £2,683 4s sd.
The Engineer’s, Sexton’s and Pound keeper’s reports were read and received.
Cr Auld and the Chairman moved that the Sexton’s wages be increased to £4 per week.— Carried. The Chairman and Cr Auld moved that the Fife Br.gade be notified the County truck will not be available, for fires in future. — Carried. Crs O’Regan and Paine inov ed that Mr Molloy be voted £5 for repairs to Hard Creek Road to be paid when funds arc available.—The motion was lost. Correspondence was received from the following: —
Crown Solicitor and T. E. Coates, notifying sales of properties and asking for amendments to Roll. (Transfers granted and rolls amended); T. Blackadder, asking that his name be removed from the roll with respect to timber warrant No. 5690 as same has lapsed; Commissioner of Crown Lands, forwarding cancellation of land; Mines Department advising that the following have been granted a reduction in rent to 2/6 per acre per annum for a period of 12 months from Ist January, 1927: —■ North Big River Gold Mines Ltd, Nev.Millerton Mines Ltd, South Blackwater Mines Ltd; also that North Blackwater Mines have been granted a reduction in rent to 2/6 per acre per annum for a period of 6 months from Ist July, 1926; also that Howell and Party have been granted an extension of time until Ist April next within which to pay rents due under their mining privileges; IL E. Holland M.P. and Henry Betts re Suspension Bridge at Oweka; Overseer Murchison County Council advising that it is impossible to get the monkey from Rapahannoek river; Murehison County Council, advising that the main tenance of Boundary Road is a matter for Iriangahua County Council; Mines Department forwarding authority for/ restoration Of Snowy Creek Hukawal Road. The Secretary, Fire Brigade, requested that Fire Station be renovated and painted. The Chairman ami Cr Auld moved that the engineer report upon the matter to the next meeting.—Carried. R, M. Hempseed asked permission to erect a petrol pump on -road opposite his store al Waiuta, also from Twomey’s Taxis same request. —Permission granted subject to approval of engineer at a charge of £3 per annum. The Department of Health wrote re drainage etc at Reefton school of Mines.—Resolved copy of letter be forwarded to Secretary School Mines.
The Health Department wrote re condition of old stables at Tkamatua. —Resolved copy of letter bo sent to owner. Mrs C. A. Howell wrote re track up Antonio’s Creek. —Referred to engineer to attend to.
E. A. lemon wrote re Snowy Creek Erosion.: —Cr Byrne said tho Chairman proposed that the Engineer inspect and report upon the matter. —Carried.
The Minister of Public Works and Mr R. P. Hudson M.P. wrote re erosion at Rosstown and Recfton Hospital. (Ts Blackadder and Paine moved that the Public Works Department be asked to cxpccTittc the. grant for protection works at Rosstown as matter is urgent.—Carried. HOSPITAL AFFAIRS. The Hospital ‘Board met on W-dtlnc.'-' day evening at 7.30 p.in. Present: — Messrs J. B. Auld (chair), O’Regan, Seawright, Paiuc, Byrne, Watsbn, Blackadder, Mclnroe . Correspondence Was received as follows:—From Westland, Timber Workers Union, asking that nieuibcfs be admittetl free oil cliarge to the hospital provided the Union guarantees 50 per cent of the charges usually paid.—Received and left to stand over until after the Hospital Conference in Christchurch nex: week.
Buller Hospital ’Board wrote that a resident of the district was admitted to the Hospital. It was resolved that Buller Board be informed this Board is not liable, as he had been in. Buller eight months.
The department of Health advised that an order has been placed with A. and T. Burt Ltd., Wellington, for five Cannistcr type sterilizing drums. The Waiuta Medical,,- Association wrote re an agreement between Dr Church, the Board and Association, suggesting it he renew’ed for a further two years, and Dr Church advised he was agreeable. On the motion of Messrs Byrne and Walson., Dr Church was reappointed for two years.
The Department of Health wrote i* pioposed capital expenditure for 1927 28. It was resolved that £lOOO be ask ud for the erection of a maternitv ward,
Mr M. Conway furnished particulars of account rendered. Mr Byrne and Mr Mclnroe moved that 21/- for accommodation be deleted from the account.—Carried.
A Waiuta resident applied for assistance. It was decided that the sum of £2 per week he granted, and that, a report be asked from Dr Church respecting the applicant’s health.
Miss Barry wrote refusing io accept the Board’s terms, and asking that the matter be dealt with at a full meeting of the Board. Mr O'Regan asked that the wording of the original resolution be read. Mr. Paine moved and Mr. Watson seconded that the lettdr be received, and no action be taken.—Carried. The, Department of Health advised vacancies in departmental institutions v jj.—Otaki IS; Piikurai'ic 101. On the motion of Mr Paine, seconded by Mr Blaekadder, it was resolved that Miss N. J. Sullivan of Wanganui be appointed to the position of Matiyn <>'. [the Recfton Hospital. Applications'for the position of probationer were received from Misses N. R. Andrews, M. Meibom, V. Walsh and C. O’Donnell. Mr Mclnroe moved that Miss Walsh be appointed as he considered that Miss Walsh had been unjustly treated before when on the hospital stall'. Mr Auld said he look exception to Mr Mclnroe's remarks that Miss Walsh was unjustly treated. Mr Paine, and Mr Mclnroe. proposed that two Probationers: be appointed. - The. inetion was lost. Mi- Seawright moved that Miss Mel bora be appointed, but there was no seconder. Messrs Mclnroe and Paine moved that Miss Walsh be appointed.
Mr O’Regan moved an amendment ttiat Miss Andrews be appointed. The amendment was carried, and Miss Andrews was appointed. Messrs O’Regan and Paine, moved that a Chinese resident receive assistance if inquiries prove satisfactory.— Carried.
A list of accounts were read whirl, tho Secretary recommended be written off as not recoverable. It was proposed bv Mr O’Regan that the accounts recommended be treated as irrecoverable. Sir Watson seconded. —Carried. Hospital reports were: —Waiuta:— Admitted 2, discharged 2, no. or outpatients 34; attendances 138. Reefton Hospital:—Admitted 5, dis charged 9, remaining in 2.3, no. out patients 3, attendances 5, operations 3. lectures 1.
