IN TEST SELECTION. Splendid Performance. WELLINGTON, Fob. 23. The Greyniouth Municipal Band fin I ished third in the test selection contest to-night for the championship of New Zealand. For a.. Band just coming out of the B. (trade, the Grey Band ’s' ■pbiThirmanee was a remarkable one. The playing of three of the soloists namely. Bandsmen Leo Carruthers, E Ellery ,and Johnny Robertson, was an outstanding feature of the.performance The prospects for further success on the Grey Band’s part are good. In the tenor horn contest, Avon by Wood (New Plymouth) with 981, the Grey entrant, Bandsman J. Contessa. In the troiiibono event, Leo Carruthers secured 79, being a couple of points from third. Croft (Wellington Tramways) scored 87, Marshall (Invercargill <B5, filled first and second places. Brown (Wanganui) <B2, was third. H. Dunshea, (Grey) secured (»(i. Carruth ers received favourable notice from the the judge. Word v.as received in Greymouth last night that the Greymoutli Band were unfortunate in that their Solo soprano, Bandsman Griffin, was unable to play in the first test, owing to his lips having been affected by recent playing. In that event, the place secured is the more meritorious, and as the soprano work in the piece is heavy, and Griffin in form is fully equal to it,’it is probable his inclusion last night would have placed the Band still higher up the
