VICTORIAN RACING. MELBOURNE, February 23. T. Lynch rides Hawick, W. IToysted rides Greenella and T. Lewis ride. l Limestone in the Newmarket Handicap At Mentone to-day Lileah won the Open Handicap by half a length from the Newmarket candidate, Palelight Beppinsa was third. Time 1.14. Trainer James Scobie is indisposed in the hospital, but is improving. GENERAL NOTES. T. Green had a very profitable trip to Riccarton on Saturday. The Awapuni apprentice scored on R. J. Mason’s trio, Agrion, Haze, and Shalimar, and finished second on F. D. Jones’s pair. Battlement and Young Lochinvar. He rode in only five of the eight races for three firsts and two seconds. F. E. Jones rode Footfall in the Midsummer Handiepa and not T. Green, as sent out in some messages. It is understood that Limerick will leave for Australia on 18th March, and it is possible that J. M. Cameron will take The Hawk and Goshawk to Sydney on the same steamer. All these horses can be raced on the first day of the next Wellington Meeting.

There is a story told about Booster’s success at the recent AVellington Meeting. AVhen A. E. Didham was being legged up on the Solferino gelding the owner said, “Do your best, you have only a rough chance.” After the race Didham was told by the owner, v ou rode a real good race, you are on £25.” The owner of Booster afterwards discovered that he had ommitted to invest £7 10s for some West Coast friends, and this meant the loss of a very substantial sum. A promise is, however, a promise, and Didham received a cheque that marked a substantial gift beyond his ridding fees.

Agrion is the nineteenth winner of the Middle Park Plate saddled by R J Mason since the race inaugurated in 1884.

It is rather interesting to note that the first and latest winner of the Middle Park Plate both trace to the same taproot. Lady Evelyn, who won in 1884, when the race first appeared on the calender, was got by Perkin AVarbeck from Pulchra, and Agrion, who won the race run on Saturday last, claims Lady Evelyn as his third dam.

According to statistics compiled by The Hawk has won 23,706 sovs in stakes.

Mr R. A. M'Kenzie, who won this year’s AVanganui Cup, also won the same race with Sunart in 1923. Both his winners were got by an Elderslio Stud sire

The A’ictorian crack, Manfred, appears to have gone back to his unruly habits at the barrier On the opening day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting he was left at the post in the St George Stakes, and he rc pcated the performance ix the Futurity Stakes on Saturday. Mr K. D. Dunean’s Paper Money— Peronilla filly, Frenzied Finance, has been thrown out of work and will be sent to the stud. She won the Debu taute Stakes at AVanganui in the spring, and had a couple of subsequent second? to her credit. Something then went wrong with her and she has got been raced since the Masterton Spring Meet ing.

Ellis The Absurd—Bela colt, full brother to Thespian, which realised 2250 guineas when sold for Melbourne at Mr. George Currie’s yearling sale at ‘ ‘ Boatanui ” last February, has not yet been raced. To In* known by the name of Farrago, he has been in training for son?? time on the Epsom. (Vietoria'l tracks, so may be seen out at some of the autumn meetings. So far no fore, casts seems to have been made as to his prospects of rivalling the tine record of his elder brother, now doing duty as a sire at Koatanui. Another high-priced one in Valicare’s brother. Avant Courier, who, as a yearling, cost just about twice as much as Farrago and who was put by after running unsuccessfully in the A.J.C. Breeders’ Plate, is also working on the same course. lie is said to have tihekened out and grown into an extremely handsome juvenile. On looks and lineage this pair should make names fur th< m selves later on. Pinthair, who won rhe W anganui Cup last last week, was ridden by T. Greej not by J. Barry as telegraplied. Gret’.i was thus associated with Piufhair's three recent successive Cup victories. Green has, after Saturday’s Meeting, raised his total of winning rides to 25], and is well ahead on the list of apprentice jockeys. Reports from Auckland state flint there is a prospect of To Kara returning to the rare track. When In* pulleil up lame after the Auckland Cup, it was thought his racing career was at ar. end, but the trouble has yielded 1 <• t reatment. Rapier bear- s bright appearance and obviously he has thrived on the racing and travelling he has had lately. P will be no surprise if he wins another big race this season. As a preliminary he may have a run with the sprinters at Motukarara early next month. The Middle Park Plate is one of the

races in which Mr G. D. Greenwood has scored several notable victories with good horses. Emperailor was his firs! winner, while Biplane ami Pluto were two others. Gloaming won twice, and on Saturday Agrion gave his sixth win. As a result of his win in the Middle Park Plate on Saturday, Agrion now takes first place as a money-earner among this season’s two-year-olds. ll* opened his account with a handicap at liic<arton in the spring, while at th Auckland siinime” meeting lie won the Royal Stakes. The juvenile form to date entitles him tr rank as one of th? best of his age, ar .l he looks certain to play a leading part in the big races in I he au< umn. Happy Days has joined J. W. Jennings” team at Riccarton. After some racing on the flat, he will be got readv for a jumping campaign in the winter. Mr G. D. Greenwood put up a great performance with his team at Riccarton on Saturday, when he had horses racing in three events, all of which he won. Haze opened the ball in the Trial Stakes. whil<> Agrion captured the Middle Park Plate, and Shalimar took the Lyttelton Plate. As Nincompoop and Ophir, two other winners, did their earlv racing for the same stable, though nov. (‘presenting other owners. Mr Green vood had reason to regard Saturday’tracing with great pleasure. A three-year-old sister +o Beauforc is being trained at West Maitland for Air. AV. 11. Mackay (says a Sydney writer). She ran three furlongs in 41s. one morning recently. Naturally Mr Mackay hopes that the filly has son-.e of the pace of her illustrious brother, without the bad temper of her other brother, Glen Garry, with which I. H Andrews could do nothing. The cranky fellow had a playful way of kicking his loose I ox to splinters. Mr Mackay con ttmplite • rat iug again !’.< iufoid’ half brother. Anambah. by Magpie, who went from Newcastle a rear ago with a great reputation as a sprinter, but found himself up against A’alicare ie a. Flying Handicap at Randwick, and had to be content with second place. Anambah lias had twelve months’ spell. Limerick continues to get through

useful tasks, which are iow becoming more serious. According to present intent ibus, it is pretty certain that he will make a trip to Sydnev, for the autumn meeting of the Australian Jockey Chib. If he is at his best his meeting with Rampion in the St Legar will be one of the attractions of the East-r fixture at Randwick. Charley Bingen, who is a son of Grea* Bingen, has not proved a success at the pacing g it. Recently he went into R L. Al ills s stable and that trainer is working the good looking horse at the trotting gait. Charley Bingen seems more contented when Working '* ith hopples. and he may develop into a useful sort. ■> JRe has only been a few times on the track •* but he has a good way of doing his work and speed may follow in the future. *■ I’. Riddle is working a sister to his champion Shiek. The youngster, in the meantime, is working at the trotting gait but she is not doing anything but slow jogging. She is a compact, wellbuilt mare. Prince Pointer is still enjoying a spell and he will not be put into work again for some time.
