UNCONSCIOUS ON BEACH. AUCKLAND, January 12. A man named Len Barnard, aged 27 Who is believed to be from Island Bay Wellington, was found on Alilforu Beach, at 7 o’clock this morning in an unconscious state. Two doctors failed to bring him round, and he was admitted to the Auckland Hospital at II o’clock, ell wns still unconscious at 1 o’clock this afternoon. His symptoms are those of drug poisoning. CHILD MOTOR VICTIM. PAIIIATUA, January 12. Av distressing accident occurred at Hukanui, when Beryl Alabey, aged 34 the daughter of R. Alabey, had her ai’m crushed by a motor lorry. Her father was manoeuvring the lorry in the Ha kanui station yard, when he heard a (•]•>•. He jumped down and found the rear wheel lying on the. child’s arm. In frantic haste he moved the lorry up a pace, but it was found that the child’s arm was crushed and mangled. She was removed to the Pahiatua IL.-s--pital, where the arm was amputated. FIRE IN EEICIf BUILDING. HASTINGS, January 12. Last night, a large brick building in Russel.' street, owned by John Blake, of Hastings, and occupied by A. L. Bullen ami Co., autioneers, was burn! out to a shell. A biick wall prevent ed Hie lire connecting ‘with Joe To’s grocery next door. Bullen went into the incubating room to trim the lamps, and, the match burning bis fingers, he threw it away, when cocoa matting got aflame. In try ing to pul this out with a sack, he upset an incubator lamp, which set fire to flax, cocoa matring, and other inflammable material, the flames spreading swiftly. Bullen made his escape. The contents, valued at about £506, were, destroyed, besides goods awaiting sale owned by clients. The upper floor, occupied by the National Service Club, as a social hall, was also destroyed, with furniture and fittings valued at about £2OO. Bullen’s insurance is £5OO on the stock and £250 on the incubators and accessories. There was also a risk of £l5OO on the building. The National Service Club loss is covered by insura nee. TRAINS DELAYED. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 12. The engine of the 8 a.m. train from Ashburton to Christchurch broke down this morning between Dromore am’ Chertsey, delaying several other trains. Eventually the engine of the Invercar<>ill goods express was transferred to the Ashburton train, ami Christchurch was reached over an hour late.
