“MACAULAY’S MAORI.”

ORIGIN OF THE FIGURE

LONDON, Nov. 20.

Dr. A. J. Harrop, writing in John O’London’s Weekly, adds his quota to the prolonged discussion on the subject of “Macaulay’s New Zealander.” “At a time when a Maori Rugby team of travellers from New Zealand is touring this country,” he writes, “it may be of interest to determine as far as possible tho origin of the figure. Foj, it may be stated confidently, the New Zealander of Macaulay’s day was a Maori. Of that there can be very little doubt. I have read dozens of books on New Zealand, written about the same time as Macaulay’s famous Edinburgh Review article of October, 1849, and in all cases where the term ‘New Zealander’ is used, the context shows that it is a native of tho country who is indicated.”
